re: Baby Mason...

posted 27th Nov
Just curious - but why don't you like them saying Baby Hawk? IMO it's kinda cute... if it's to honor someone you love, then it should be a positive thing. I'm sure once he's here they will call him Mason or just correct them when they don't. This is a prime example as to why DH and I are not telling names for the next child we have

I posted about it asking if anyone else had this happen, not for people to criticize his name and ask if i've told them. I've obviously told them about the issue. Changing his name isn't an option.. I SPECIFICALLY asked if any other mothers have had this happen.

I love that name. My brother is named Mason and I adore the name. I also love how you used your grandfathers name.
IMO if they keep doing it, keep telling them. If they don't like it, tell them to suck it up, it's your child and he has a name. Good Luck deary!

I honestly think I get so aggrivated over it, because I love the sound of baby Mason wayy better than Baby Hawk, and the next baby we definately wont spill the names before it arrives!

aw, cute. Not trying to be rude at all. I was trying to help her. I didn't realize that she had already TOLD them not to call her baby that. Why is it rude to suggest she go another route by naming her child in another way? Get over yourself.

OP- I'm sorry if you took my comments the wrong way. I hope your friends/family stop being stupid about the baby's name. Good luck.

I think it's adorable and a great way to honor your grandfather, as well as your heritage!

Just keep reminding people that his first name is Mason. I get a lot of unwanted nicknames for my son as well, since his name is James and that's what I would prefer him to be called...

I would just correct Them and say "oh mason?"

Our family and friends all call lylian "lily". We have NEVER called her that or introduced her as that and she has never called herself that or introduced herself as that. We kind of let it go. It bothers SO a lot but I told him "if she has a problem with it she can tell them. It's her name not ours". Obviously your baby can't stand up for himself. But I think hawk is a fun nickname. It'd be a pretty sweet sports nickname in h.s. too

Thank you! I may not look 25% cherokee but it's definately really important to us!

Oh so you weren't being rude asking her why she even bothered to post about it? Right.

My son's name is Mason and a few of my friends started calling him may may. Not really sure why and it sounds kinda girly to me. Also a majority of the time his dad calls him Cole which is his middle name. But he does that cuz Mason has a twin brother named Micah and he hates that I gave them both M names.

Quoting ♥ Mason's Mommy:" My grandfather , Red Hawk was 100 % cherokee, he passed away a week before I got pregnant. So he's named after him."

That's cool

If I were in your situation, I would just ignore it and call him by his first name. Maybe if you're persistant with it, people may go with 'Mason' moreso than 'Hawk'.
although I do think it's a pretty damn cool nickname to have

If you named him after your grandfather who just passed, and they are calling him by that name. Maybe its just their way of coping with your grandfather's death and trying to remember/honor him. IDK, but its just a thought. I can understand your frustration though, if they are calling him a different name than you wanted.

Quoting ♥ Mason's Mommy:" ? It's a family cherokee name?"

Then you should be honored! Maybe that is why they are clinging on to it.

Get over it, it's not like their calling him something horrible or disrespectful. Who cares what YOU want to call him. YOU don't get to tell everyone else what to call him.

I'm going through the same discussion with my husband. I'm due in may and LOVE the name Coraline. My husband is OK with it, but is refusing to let anyone call her Cora. I told him the same thing I'm telling you. Suck it up and get the big girl panties out. you can't control family nick names.

Hell, My daughter is called Pipe (her name is piper)by her grandfather. She loves it and that's all that matters.
