By putting them and their CHOSEN lifestyle down. How does that extreme help women any more then an extreme that does not allow them NOT to make a choice? You allow them no choice either by your judgement.."

Well said.

I have nothing against polygamy, but I dont think prostitution would stop if it were allowed. People could still be polygamists if they choose... it just isnt recognized. Prostitution happens when someones wants ass freely.... whether they be married or not. That has NOTHING to do with polygamy being allowed.

But as a side note... I dont know why the hijab is looked at as a form of oppression. As long as the woman WANTS to wear it. I dont agree with why some people cover up (as in the feelings of "Men cant control themselves with the lure of a woman, so the WOMAN must cover up" I feel that dude... a guy should be able to control himself. That's my thought. But the thought of "My body is my temple and my temple is for the privacy of the home/my husband" is something I will never speak out against. That should be allowed/not be controversial.

i was wondering, i haven't seen the show, but most men that i've seen in those situations are extremely controlling and the women are extremely brainwashed and trapped by that fact.

i don't see a need for a formal institutional approval of it -- e.g. making marriage between more than two people legal, b/c it IS such a minority that would practice it, and for the most part -- w/out extremely unbalanced sexist religion creating an artifice against which the life style is backed, polygamous relationships never last -- in their original form. one of the partners always moves on to something else.

polygamy doesn't seem to be something people are drawn to for the most part -- outside of religions that would have the women birthing out new babies who can't say no to the religion they're being born and brainwashed into.

if you're raised in it, you never had a choice.

if you're brainwashed, you're not thinking anyway.

if you're financially dependent on your husband, it's clearly not much of a choice to be made...

so -- yeah, this form of polygamy hurts a lot of people. mostly children and women.

it is sexist to force one gender into a paradigm like that.

i'm glad you don't change your names, i think that's great, but to argue for polygamy as a way to prevent things like prostitution is absurd.

people should get married b/c they love and trust one another and believe that they can build a lifetime of happiness together based on their shared interests / personalities.

But those happen in one on one marriages as well. I mean, I'll admit I'm financially dependent on my husband. I was raised believing in one man, one woman. Does that mean I never had a choice but to live this way, and thus remove the entire "choice" part of my life?

my judgement of their position does nothing to them, their choice to conform to religious law and hide their bodies/faces has a dramatic impact on how they interact w/ the rest of society.

it creates a massive wall between these women and the rest of us, who simply cannot fathom why you'd hide yourself from the world, b/c there is no shame in being me -- there is no need to cover myself and no logic save that which is extremely sexist -- towards men and women.

no, it simply degrades your ability to choose.

not having your own financial independence puts the burden of choice heavily into the "stay w/ this man to continue living comfortably" category.

the hijab is oppressive to the women... it separates them in the public arena -- literally creating a uniform dark mask over their identities, it hides them.

it is also extremely sexist towards men, as it assumes they cannot behave like civil decent humans when they see a woman.

Wow that's a lot of assumptions being made. Many times the women DON'T have a choice. And even if that's the lifestyle they choose, they are not seen as equal because they are not allowed the same freedoms as men are. THAT is what makes it oppressive, the lack of equality.

Religion was created by man so by nature it's oppressive.
