It's the age! My 3 year old is doing the same stuff. We start taking her toys out of her room as she does it. She gets even more mad but eventually calms down but it has taken up to a hour to an hour and a half before. It's awful! Mainly happens at bed time.

I have issues like this with my 3 yr old. His anger stems from being non verbal and frustrated. I don't think he's as extreme as yours. Mostly my boy hits, cries loudly and doesn't want to be touched or talked to. But then when he has calmed down he needs snuggles and either falls asleep or takes a rest it's so draining on him.

Anyway his OT recently gave me a referral to a child behavioral therapist after he straight punched her when she asked him to do something. I called, but it's not covered by insurance. And he's not trying to be mean. I'm going to give it some time before I look into it further.
^With that, your pediatrician or family doctor would be a good resource to start with. They will provide resources and ideas to try to help him when he's in a fit.

It could be a few different things.

It could just be a stage and he's testing the waters.

If he's hyperactive, more so than an average 3 year old, he may have some form of ADHD. I'm not about labels, but lack of impulse control in boys often manifests itself as aggression.

He may have an overstimulated nervous system, which could be managed with nutritional medicine (DHA and EPA may help).

This is like my son- or was like my son. Only our insurance covered behavior therapy.

But it really can be the age, but I really suggest you talk with your pedi.

You might look into some form of play therapy also.

I had severe separation anxiety in Kindergarten due to my father's death the year before. I only had to have 3 sessions of play therapy and I was okay to go to school after that.
