How to feed your stubborn toddler

posted 26th Nov
My son is 20 months old, he wont eat anything. He only wants to eat cheese and occasionally saltine crackers, or bread, or just peanut butter. But not all together, has to be individually. He really likes water & juice..not a fan of milk.
Any ideas, tips, tricks?

ETA, he loves peas, he calls them balls.

I cook what I want for dinner, and if the kids don't eat it it's pretty much a SOL situation. They do go back to eat it when they are hungry enough, children won't starve themselves to death. lol

This.

I cook a main dish and two sides. Among the three options, if they don't eat, it means they are not hungry.

eh my son is 21 months and some days all he wants is string cheese, grapes, and popsicles!! He is a healthy 24lbs, so I am honestly worrying about it. I offer him food throughout the day and if eats great, if he doesn't oh well. I find when I push the issue he is more resistant to it. If I just put him in his chair, give him the food and walk away, he eats just fine.
Don't worry, he will eat what he needs to. toddler are typically picky, I went through it with my daughter as well and she is now 4.5yrs old and eats great, and weighs a healthy 40lbs!

Read the book "How To Get Your Kid To Eat... But Not Too Much!" It was reccomended by a friend who is currently a WIC Nutritionist supervisor. It actually has a ton of great info and very helpful when Leah wouldn't eat anything.

I'm a tough love kind of mom I guess. I mean, I ask them what they want for dinner and I'll work around it. But if they want to eat their chicken but not their veggies, then ask for a snack... they can go back to the damn table and finish their veggies. Lol.
My oldest has gone to bed a few times without eating supper, it bothers me none because it was her choice. And I don't get out of bed at 5 am either when she wakes me up saying she is hungry, I make her wait until 8 to eat breakfast with everyone else.

I'm with Sarah. Just keep trying new foods.

Have you tried flavoring his milk with chocolate or strawberry? I know it's not the BEST idea, but Ovaltine supposedly has vitamins in it so it's not all teeth rot.   I don't really know on that one because my son LOVES milk.

And that book martinez suggested sounds great.

He's not old enough to reason with, lol, still a baby.
He doesn't even ask for snacks.

My son will be 22 months on the 3rd. I cook what we have for dinner. I make him a plate and he will eat what he wants off it. Fortunately he is not super picky though recently he started developing more of a taste so I may be facing it soon:/

As for the rest of the day I give him choices usually between two things and let him pick what he wants.

My daughter just went a week without taking more than two bites at any meal. It is totally normal when they are not going through a lot of growing. Trust his body to tell him when he needs food.
