what to do about constipation in a 1 year old.

he'll be 12 months the 4th of December. we just switched him to whole milk and hes constipated i wanna know what i can do to help it loosen up because hes been trying to poop and its hard turds. and light colored. are there any foods we can give him to soften it up. he was struggling a little bit ago and when he finally pooped there was a little bit of blood in it. i tried giving him prune juice yesterday, and after this. so i don't know what to give him i know its because of the switch.

Fiber. Green veggies, certain cereals have fiber like raisin bran

apple juice (water it down) also at DS's most recent appt they told us we could give him stuff like metamucil (fiber) if he was having issues pooping, but he's 4, I don't know what the minimum age is that you can start doing that.

Pears or pear juice is good. Also, you can do Miralax. Call the pedi for specific dosing. I'd do the stool softener to get things moving and then maintain by adding more fiber into his diet. Poor buddy.

Nothing you give him by mouth will soften the poop in his rectum.
First things first! If he hasn't gotten it all out, he may need some help "from below." A glycerin suppository of Pedialax liquid glycerin (in little bulbs) will help. If you aren't sure if he is done, lubricating his butt may help as the poops are very hard to pass.
Assuming the rocky stuff is already out, you can modify what he eats to help. First, avoid constipation foods like bananas, rice, cheese and applesauce. Then give him foods that are full of fiber and help loosen poops like peaches, pears, prunes, raisins, orange sections.
Someone said to dilute the apple juice. That defeats the purpose of the juice. While he is constipated, you want full-strength juice. When just maintaining good pooping habits, diluted apple juice MAY be enough.
My LO is 4. Since about 1 I have kept watch of her poops and modify her diet accordingly. I have to hide bananas as she loves them and will eat 2 if I don't watch.... And then she is constipated!
Good luck!

They probably won't help or hurt.
Fruit nectars from GOYA helped us a lot when she was about 1-2. Apricot nectar was yummy and gave her easy poops!

YES suppositories work like a charm. Didn't even think of that.

thanks ill try these ideas. they used to tell us to give him Karo Syrup in his bottle. that didn't work for him tho when he was littler. i have the suppositories but the doctor made it sound like he didn't want us to use them on him last time he got constipated.

If the rock-hard poops are out already, I agree with the doc. If not, I disagree as they only get harder and bigger.
My LOs poop turned into a hard golf ball. If was so hard to pass. The only thing that worked was the pedialax liquid and taking her to the park so she was active,
The poor thing was SCREAMING when she pooped. It sounds disgusting, but I was tempted to take a pic of the poop as it was hard to fathom it coming from a baby's bottom. And, it made a giant bulge in her diaper before we changed her.
I'm so glad those days are over.
