Level2 Ultrasound...positive blood test

posted 26th Nov
Thursday I go for a level 2 ultrasound at a specialist. IMy normal doctor did the blood work and the baby tested postive for Spina Bifida.... He said 95% of the time it's a false postive and not to freak out, but I'M FREAKING out now! Anyone else have a false positive?!?

My sister tested positive and she went for her ultrasound and they found out it was twins, so it was a false positive. Good luck!

TWINS?!??? Was that her first ultrasound? I'll be 19 weeks on Wednesday...hopefully they would have already known if that was the case lol! Thank you though!

Your baby didn't test positive, its just a screen of AFP produced by baby...they take that level and look at your age and other factors to determine a "risk percentage" that the child could have spina bifida, anencephaly or downs. I would be freaking out too but there are a lot of false positives because its not a true diagnosis just a risk factor.

I had the same test and came back a 1/16 risk for downs syndrome for my son. After many level 2 u/s, a fetal echo-cardiogram and opting for the more accurate blood test, the harmony test, it came back 1/10,000 odds and my son does NOT have downs syndrome. I know it is hard not to worry. I have been there. But your doc is right. There is a higher chance of a false positive rather than an actual positive.

I'm only 24 and nothing runs in either of our families... I think that is why I'm the most stressed! Where did this positive test come from lol!? Ahhh!

They pulled that crap with me! I was sooo upset and stressed about it and thinking way down the line with the worse possible case of it and everything! I go in for a consultation before the ultrasound and they said the levels they found were so low that baby is more than likely fine but they want to look anyway! -.- I think it was a money scam, had they told me the scores over the phone I wouldn't of worried in the slightest. ): don't stress too much by it! I'm sure it's just another one of those things. -.-

There are a lot of factors that can affect the test and also room for error. The AFP levels are different at various wks of pregnancy so if someone messed up dates or anything it could be off there. Also amniotic fluid levels can affect AFP. When is your lvl 2?

The same EXACT thing happened to me during my first pregnancy. You will probably have to speak to a genetic counselor about the risks of a positive quad test and they'll describe to you in depth about what that means. Then you will go see the specialist who will give you an intense ultrasound. You'll see the lobes of your baby's brain, the chambers of your baby's heart, the development of baby's internal organs. Usually that is when they tell you it is a false positive and that everything looks fine. They may discuss an amniocentisis (sp?) where they take some amniotic fluid to test that. But by the time the ultrasound is done, you'll pretty much know weather or not you have an actual reason to worry. The risk to an amniocentisis is kinda high. So don't be afraid to ask questions. Anyway, typically, the positive test IS false. As a matter of fact, with this pregnancy, I just refused to get it done. no sense worrying about something that is out of my control. I was totally freaking out too, so much so that I got myself sick over it. It's crazy intense. But my daughter is healthy and happy, and trouble free. Anyway, good luck to ya.

I declined the triple screen as well this time. I have a lvl 2 on wednesday though because my OB and his US tech are morons.

I'm not positive if it was her first ultrasound or not but she was shocked because twins don't run in our family or the babies dads family.. But more than likely its just a false positive.

Do you know if I will have results right away? Or do they have to send off for the results...?

It depends on where you are going to have it done. I just had mine this morning at a perinatal center and a tech did the US for about an hour and then the doctor came in and looked it over...I was told then and there that everything looked great.
