Sensory issues?

posted 26th Nov
My daughter is 3 (turned three in August) she's been doing some odd things lately. Some I've noticed much more. She's always been a headbanger. Sometimes until she bleeds. Lately she's been weird about clothes and it's getting bad. She refuses to wear jeans, everything she wears is too tight, she won't wear shoes because their "too tight" she won't sleep with blankets because they feel bad on her skin.
Same with coats and long sleeves. She won't let me brush her hair. Says it hurts. She also won't re eat food. If she leaves food on the table for ten minutes and won't retouch it because it's "spoiled" same with juice. She also has to touch my Chest to sleep. She nursed for 32 months , and puts her arm in my shirt when she's scared or tired. Is something wrong?

The state will test her for free and then provide free services.

Really? Where would I even find out about that?

She sounds similar to my dd, and she has what they used to call sensory integration dysfunction (I don't remember the new name for it). Dd gets bothered by tight clothing, saying it bothers her. She would tell me certain fabrics were "itchy" (they weren't), and would refuse to touch them. She also loves to touch certain fabrics that are really soft over and over again. And she used to rub my arm for what seemed like hours, for years, until I put my foot down because it started to irritate me.

I had her tested and diagnosed privately by a nueropsychiatrist. They use vocational rehab to address the problem, which can be done both privately (which she did for about 2 years) and through the school. My daughter was diagnosed in 1st grade, and is now in 7th grade, and still receives voc rehab through school.

And when you get her tested don't talk her up. try to not mention the things she can do so it's easier to "fail" and then she'll get the free help.
