Declawing a cat

posted 26th Nov
After months of begging SO to let me bring a kitten into our family (he HATES cats), he finally said yes. But he said that he has one condition, that I have to get the kitten declawed when it is old enough. He had a bad experience with a cat where it would constantly claw him up bad and tear up everything. He doesn't want the kids getting clawed or the furniture ripped up.

I've never had any of my cats declawed and I know next to nothing about the procedure. I've heard it's very controversial.
I'm not getting the kitten until after tax time, but I went ahead and called a couple of vet's offices to see how much it would cost. I found out I can get the kitten declawed and spayed/neutered at the same time and have a 2 night hospital stay for $350. That's pretty good, right? My stepmom in Atlanta says that it's very good.

Thoughts?

Its a disgusting process and inhumane. Plus they make nail caps for kitties. But usually if you have scratch poles around they don't tend to tear up anything. As for conditions tell him to kiss off, you aren't a child to be dictated on when you can or can't bring things into the house.

I hate people who declaw cats!

Spaying and neutering is healthier for the animal/ we have a huge population of animals without homes. But claws are part of them! It makes me sad

Don't want them to stretch? Get a dog! Lol

I think it's fine that he has conditions. He pays 100% on all the bills and everything. I get to pay nothing at all and keep all the money I earn from my job for whatever I see fit.

Just imagine having all the tips of your fingers cut off. its disgusting and inhumane. we rescued a declawed cat and he hates his feet touched, he acts like they hurt him.

Thats a HORRIBLE "condition".
Just because he pays the bills it doesn't mean its ok to do such an awful procedure to a cat.

declawing a cat can completely change their temperament. we have a cat and the only thing he scratches is his scratch post and if he does do something we dont like we have a spray bottle to detour him from doing the bad behavior. and a lot of shelters will even make you sign something when you adopt them, that you wont declaw them

Many cats at the shelter have already been declawed. It is better to get a cat from a shelter anyway.

Ok, maybe your not an animal lover?

Either way image someone cutting off all of your fingers at the first or second knuckle. That's what you would do to this poor cat. Don't get it if you want to mutilate it.

I see nothing wrong with declawing a cat. I was planning to get a cat awhile back and had called around to see how much it cost, and that price is reasonable. I've been considering getting a cat for my daughter for Christmas and if I do, I'll get the cat declawed. I don't want it messing up my furniture or my kid. And those cap things don't even look like they'd stay on, what cat would want to keep those things on? I've had cats before and having a scratch post didn't stop them from scratching the furniture. If you plan to keep the cat forever and always have it inside, I don't see the issue.
