re: Declawing a cat

Quoting Melissa Cumbee:" I had to get my cats declawed due to it being in my lease. For one of them, it was the best thing for ... [snip!] ... when he'd cuddle. He's perfectly fine with me clipping his nails. A bonus to nail clipping? You can do the back paws as well."

A lease made you declaw your cat? The smurf?

I sure as hell wouldn't live there.

I just wanted to 2nd, 3rd & 4th the suggestion of a shelter cat & an older one if possible. Where I am from they euthanize approx 80% of the overall cats they get.   And adult cats are 95%.

It is hugely depressing to go in & pick one adult to take home because you can almost guarantee here that every other adult you are seeing is dying if you don't take them ...and frankly no one has the space or money to take them all.   It makes me wish I had a farm.

OP, I wouldn't put a huge amount of thought into what age of cat you'll get if it's not a huge deal for you. Everytime I've gone to a shelter to adopt a cat, it seems that there's a particular one that "speaks" to me and just seems to fit, regardless of age. I've adopted kittens, "teens", and adult cats, and still don't think one age is better to adopt.

^^^ This! You'll know when you go in which cat is meant to be yours. Just take your time and meet as many of the cats as yours. Yeah the lease specified that all cats had to be declawed. I was just lucky my cats didn't have any ill effects. They're both still super friendly and sweet.

I can't believe people don't like black cats more. I got my cat from a friend who had kittens, but if I had not gotten her I would've went to the shelter to get one. I've always wanted a black cat, they are beautiful. This is my Misa, we lucked out and got a mini Angora from a mixed litter.

This is her when she was a kitten:

and this is her a few months ago on my bed. I adore her

I took my DD to a petstore today because she did really good at the dentist. They had rescue animals there and we found this cat, it wasn't a kitten, but it wasn't an adult. We loved it, it would bat at our fingers through the bars of the cage, but it didn't have its claws out. It was so sweet. That's the kind of cat I want, lol. If I had the $99 adoption fee I would have brought it home! I hated leaving it, lol.

I used to have a black cat, we named him Casper. SWEETEST cat ever, except he smurf EVERYWHERE. Like he rarely used the cat box and would crap on clothes and such. We nicknamed him Crapper, lol. He was a rescue cat, and we believe he broke his back or something as a cat because of how his legs and back were. He had giant fangs, seriously I have NEVER seen a domesticated cat have fangs like him and they would poke out under his lips and down his chin. He drooled a lot too. Totally weird cat! Huge too, he used to be like over 20 lbs. But I put him to sleep 2 years ago, he was wasting away to nothing and was about 5 pounds, which is ridiculous for his size. When we brought him in the vet said he had multiple organ failure and it was time (which I already knew, I knew I'd be taking him in to put him to sleep). I thought he fell off a counter and hurt his legs, but it was just his body shutting down to where he couldn't even stand. Poor cat. But he was so neat, my friends loved that he was so big and his fangs were so neat!

I've volunteered at the SPCA a and worked with cats who have had life-long handicaps due the side-effects of the declawing process. During the operation, a cat's joints are chopped off. Imagine someone slicing off your fingers at the top joint, that's declawing.

There are so many cheap, painless alternatives available now that I'm always shocked to hear that people still declaw. A little information goes a long way.
