Abortion pills?

posted 25th Nov
I'm not posting for myself, so please don't judge me. And please be aware before you respond that this is in abortion survivors (a protected forum).....

A girl I know went to the Dr on Wednesday to get an abortion. If she had waited another week they wouldn't have allowed her to get one. They chose to do it with the pills, where she took one on Wednesday and the other 4 (?) on Thursday. They told her that if this doesn't work, she'll have to come back in and get 4 more pills (I think). If THAT doesn't work, she'll have to have surgery.
What are the odds that the pills don't work? Has anyone ever heard of that?
How is it that they told her if she had waited another week she wouldn't be able to get it, but if this doesn't work they have 2 more methods to try which would take more than a week to do? Wouldn't that put her out of the time frame?

The first pill stops the heartbeat.

The second round of pills (You usually take 3) is cytotec and they flush everything out.

I took them for my MMC and it didn't clear everything out. 3 weeks later, I had a D&C. But I was the first person from her office that it didn't work on. (But I did pass the baby, just had left over tissue)

You have up to 8 weeks (as far as I know) for the pill, then it would go to a surgical abortion. So maybe she was about 7 weeks? Sometimes the pill won't clear you out all the way, and they'll give you another pill to try and see if that will clear everything out. If not, they will do the surgical.

So either way, if the first set of pills don't work the baby still won't be there, she would just have to have the surgery to clean everything out?

How far along is she? If they mean out of the time frame for the pills, that's correct. After youre so many weeks, you'll eventually have to get a surgical.

I'm honestly not sure. I wasn't even supposed to know she was pregnant. I only found out because someone lied to me to borrow money and told me they needed it for Christmas presents when really they were paying for her abortion.
We were just confused on why they were talking about it not working, and saying she was almost too far along to have it done. I've never really researched abortions.

She may be almost too far along for the pill. But the clinics around here will abort up to 20 weeks gestation, and I doubt she's that far along.

I think there is some miscommunication here along the lines. What she will have been told is of she had waited another week she wouldn't be in the time frame to take the pills and would have had to have a surgical abortion, so she wouldn't have been allowed a medical abortion (the pills). In regards to telling her if the pills don't work they could give her more pills or she would have to have a surgical abortion well that is just standard medical practice to make the patient fully aware of all possibilities. With any medical treatment/surgery/etc the Doctor/Nurse must always make you aware of all risks or possible outcomes. There is always a chance the pills won't work fully and it could result in more pills or a surgical to clear out any remaining tissue so they will of course go through all of this with her. She's been told exactly the same thing that every single woman has been in for an abortion has been told. Think if you go in for surgery at hospital the Doctor needs to make you aware that there are risks of infection, complications, etc so it's the same thing.
