child only listening to SO?

posted 25th Nov
When it comes to my son getting in trouble he does not listen to me at all, he will just turn to me, look at me like 'who are you to tell me what to do?' then continue doing whatever it is he shouldnt be doing.
Yet when it comes to DH telling him off he listens immediately!
I dont know what to do, everyone says Im not firm enough with him but I couldnt be any more firm!
I spend all day with him and DH works all day.
Yet he doesnt seem to think Im the boss!
He just completely ignores me.

My DD is the same way... I have no idea why. But right now I'm so exhausted I just let him discipline her because it tires me more trying to be the one in charge then to just have him tell her no and she listens.

I'd definitely work to fix it now, at a young age! My ds went through a similar phase, and DH would always get onto him anytime he didn't listen to me. I wouldn't be okay with just always passing off punishment to my DH.. If he listens when your SO gets onto him, have your SO get onto him about not listening to you... Worked for us!

My son is/was the same way. We are working on it now. I also stay home with my LOs. The last week has been a lot better, but I had to work on following through with punishments and being firm.

We started kind of doing time out, when he is naughty we put him on the couch and tell him to stay, with DH he will stay till he is told he can get up (after a minute or 2) but I tried it and he listened the first time, after that he just ignored me again.

I agree with Mama MacGyver, you should work on this seriously as this could be serious after the LO is grown up.

Following through and being firm are definitely a huge part of it.

OP- I really think that's the key. If you tell him to pick up his toys, make him. If he ignores you then let him know, "if to don't listen to mommy and go pick up your toys right now you're sitting in time out." and if he continues to ignore you, sit his butt in time out until he agrees he is ready to listen and try again. Even if he gets up out of time out, put him back over and over. It WILL work, you just have to be consistent and firm!
