It does seem a little high school-ish. My boyfriend in hs bought me one.

Quoting ma ♥:" Watching MTV & just wondering how everyone else feels about "promise rings"?? Am I the only one ... [snip!] ... they are so juvenile? LOL. Honestly if a guy I were dating gave me a "promise ring", I would probably start laughing    "
Eh, I had one when I was a teenager and we ended up, and still are married.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

My high school boyfriend (now DH) proposed to me my senior prom with a promise ring. He promised that one day when we were older and had things financially settled he would marry me. He kept that promise, one year later he proposed with a diamond ring

They seem pointless IMO. It's like saying "hey one day I'll tell you I want to marry you one day"

...Why not just skip it if you're not ready to be engaged and wait until you're engaged? I don't get it.

I had a promise ring from my last boyfriend. He gave it to me right before he left for Europe for 6 months as a promise that even though he was far away he would still be there for me. It wasn't juvenile to me. It meant a lot to me because it was so hard to be away from him for so long.

ETA: I was 21 if that matters.

I got one from my husband when we were in high school and I loved it. Now we're married so it all worked out lol.
If for some crazy reason he and I divorced and I started dating again I would laugh hysterically if someone tried this on me now. Once you graduate, a promise ring is just stupid. Either pony up and commit or keep it to yourself lol.

I like the meaning behind it... just because it's "juvenile" doesn't make the action childish, kwim?

It depends on age & how long the couple has been together .. back in high school & in a 3 year relationship i liked the idea. So i voted like since I'm now married, it wont happen again but it was cute back then..

That's the thing, I don't get it either.... I just don't get it.

Or just get engaged & be engaged for a long time? There isn't a set amount of time couples HAVE to marry once they're engaged. lol.

Hmmm that kind of makes sense. I've never heard that scenario before.

High school relationships sure but as an adult I think they are silly.
