Debriding a burn

posted 25th Nov
My 2 y.o. came back from his dads today and he told me that he took him to the doctor. He went on to say that he has a 3rd degree burn from a unplugged straightener from falling onto his arm. He took him to the doc yesterday and today and told me that the doctor Debrided (sp?) the burn. I'm pissed!

1. For taking him to the doctor with out telling me

2. For not telling me that he has a 3rd degree burn

3. For letting them Debrid his burn without my knowledge OR consent (not once but TWICE)

4. For giving him liquid Lortab without my knowledge (Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen)

Do I have the right to be pissed? Should I take him off the HIPA so he can't do anything like this again? I have to take him to the doctor again tomorrow. Should I let the Debrid his arm again? It's used to minimize scarring and get dead tissue out of the burn and reduce the risk of Infection (yet one of the risks is that it can CAUSE infection and cause healing time to take longer)

What do you think?

TIA

You have every right to be pissed that this all happened without your knowledge! I'd take him back to the doctors and see what they say concerning the debriding and medication

He did the right thing by taking him to the doctor. He should have told you about it right after it happened but he was probably freaking out and just got it taken care of......

No you should not take him off of HIPA you are over reacting as far as that goes. Since he has him by himself he needs to be able to take his child to the doctor is need be

I can't believe he didn't tell you! If its so serious and prone to infection why did he not tell you. I would definetly give a him a piece of my mind

Things like this have happened before but not to this extent. I feel like if he needs to be taken to the doctor I live 5 min down the road from the doctor and can meet him there.

He really should've called u saying he was going to the drs... But all the other wouldn't bother me though. He's a dad doing what he thought was right IMO. I'd rather have my kid under pain meds for debridement too.

He should have told you....but it's his child too and has the right to make decisions about his care and to parent how he sees fit.

I don't mind the pain meds, it's the fact that he didn't tell me. I understand once but he took him on two different days and had it done and still didnt tell me.

Sounds like he did the right thing.

If there is dead tissue they need to debride it. The doctors know how to treat burns.

I have full custody, I let him go every other weekend and every other holiday. He isn't even on the BC and just recently started paying CS (I've gotten one check).

Why should he need your permission or supervision when caring for his child?

Yes it would have been nice of him to tell you but it sounds like to main thing is the child was taken care of properly!

If.she has full legal custody, I'm pretty sure he can't make medical decisions.

The proble is not that he got the.child care, it's that he made a decision he wasn't entitled to make without even telling op.
