When do doctors check eyesight for the first time.?

once they know shapes. There is a test for lazy eye that they start testing around 6 months, if your office has that machine.

never. i mean they do basic tests like follow the finger or whatever but they dont refer you to goto an eye doctor unless you ask/are concerned. usually children dont get their eyes checked til school but i brought my son when he was 2 due to a concerned lazy eye

really? I've worked in a ton of pediatric offices, and we do yearly eye tests on kids as little as 2...once they start knowing shapes. As soon as they know letters we test them on that. Anything lower than 20/40 and they get referred. And the lazy eye test isn't done everywhere, but a few offices I've worked in had it.

come to think of it maybe they did one at 3 where he read letters.. but by then we had been going to a regular eye doctor that did much more to truly determine good or bad eye sight.

I have noticed a lazy eye, and I was thinking they did a hearing test, what about eyesight,.... So I sat there snapping my fingers in front of his eyes he didn't blink,...

must be your area. I've worked in NY and AZ, and have done tests in both offices. We usually don't refer unless the parents have concerns

yea i lived in alabama and then by the time he turned 2 we moved to mass and were seen with a pedi i used to see when i was younger.. thats when i once again brought up the concern of his lazy eye which then we werre referred to see an eye doctor to get checked out. then it was til 3 when the regular doctor did the basic eye tests with him reading the letters down the hall

Well it's lazy and cross sided, I am hoping he just grows out of it

hwo old is he? its not too uncommon for newborns/infants to have a lazy eye or even be cross eyed
