Little girls and jewelry?

posted 25th Nov
At what age is it "appropriate" to give a little girl a piece of jewelry?

And by jewelry, I mean a necklace (obviously not expensive or anything) on a sturdy chain/rope.

My daughter's 3. She likes necklaces. She likes to wear mine on occasion. Right now she's fixated on that song "Glad You Came" by The Wanted. We just sat and listened to it on youtube and sang along with it like 4 times in a row, and she still wanted more.

Anyway, I know it's out of context, but when he says "I'm glad you came", I always point to her like I'm talking to her. I was thinking of getting her a little heart that says "I'm glad you came. -Mom"

Still mulling it over.

I got a gold chain with a locket when I was younger and once my daughter turned two I gave it to her. She's really good about it! Never tugs on it or anything!

Personally, I think it may be a bit young. Even my 6 year old daughter can't take care of jewelry. She breaks the chains or winds up tangling them or losing the charm

The first thing i bought my daughter was a set of 3 sterling silver bangles that she never had a problem with... at about 2 years old.. she loved them... i bought her a hello kitty necklace at 3 and every time i would pick her up from daycare they would have it at the front desk because she would be playing with it lol... she never broke it.. just couldnt stop showing it off to her friends lol

Maybe try a cheap-o, non-sentimental one first, teach her how to take care of it and see how she does? I remember having jewelry like what you're talking about around that age, and though I don't rem. how I treated it I must've took care of it, cuz it's still in good shape!

My daughter is 2 n half and she is fixed on hats, shoes, jewelry. Jewelry is only the ones we make out of her ring toys tho. It seems to be enough for now. lol. She likes to try on my rings and necklaces, but I always make sure she is in the same room with me. I guess Im over protective.

My girls wore necklaces at 3. However, they were long beaded dress up ones. At four, they still don't keep a necklace on long. They do wear earrings and bracelets. Like the gold baby bracelets.

When I was very little (around her age) my grandma was into giving my sister and I nice jewelry ( one was a solid gold bumble bee pin, one was a gold necklace with a locket and another was an older piece of family jewelry). My mom would let us wear them for special occasions like church or a school recital, but we always gave them back when we got home. When I turned about 7, she let me keep them in my room in a jewelry box, but the rules still applied - I couldn't just take them to school with me or play with them, they were for occasions and they were special.

I would look into getting something like that on etsy! I think it's an adorable and completely sweet and sentimental idea! Even if she just wears it on special occasions, when she is older, she can listen to the song and know how special it is. Aww...I'm all teary eyed, freakin pregnancy hormones.

I don't see a problem with her actually wearing the necklace. She wears play ones, and plain ones of mine all the time, so I don't think it'd be dangerous (aside from sleeping of course).

I'm more worried about her damaging it in some way or losing it.

I like the special occasions idea though. And the idea of trying it out with a plain/non-sentimental piece first. I might try that.
