I spotted what could it be?

I have been on b/c pill for 8 months now. I was on a pill where I got my period once a month. My dr put me on the new pill that I only get my period once every 3 months. Well I just finished my old pills last sat, in which I was supposed to start the sugar pill. Instead I started taking the 3 month pill. I didn't get my period, but I spotted on wed. Is this normal? I have cramps and my boobs hurt.
