Babies and Television

posted 25th Nov
My 3 month old has started paying attention to the TV. He'll be sitting on my lap or in his bouncer and if there's anything playing, he becomes totally focused on it from across the room. Sometimes I'll try to get his attention by calling him or shaking a toy and he isn't the least bit interested. I feel like he's way too young for this. And it worries me because I've read that children aren't supposed to watch TV until they're at least two. Usually I just try to distract him with something fun to play with, but I just think this is weird.
Am I alone? When is it normal for a kid to notice a TV?

My ds stops and looks a lot but I think it's the color and sound he goes back to playing after a minute

I think it's the colors and sounds.

I let my almost 8 month old watch tv with his brother and football/basketball. He likes it, I don't think it's harming him.

My son loves to watch tv. He is 10mo (7 adjusted age). Music and flashing colors really get his attention so MTV, commercials, or kids shows like Sesame Street, Dinosaur Train, and Sid the Science Kid are his favorites. He also likes to watch football with his daddy. I think it is unrealistic for kids to not be exposed to television before the age of two, we live in an electronic age where my Korean adpoted cousin figured out how to operate a tablet at the age of 2! As long as they are not plopped in front of it for hours on end and have no other type of mental stimulation I don't see where the problem is.

Of course he's going to notice it. Light and sound are distracting. If it's that big of a deal to you, have you considered turning the tv off? Lol.....

Motherly advice: don't spend too much time stressing over the things you read. Do what feels right. A 3 month old is simply stimulated by the moving shapes and sounds on the screen. I promise that it won't turn him into a mindless zombie! Lol

So why don't you turn the tv off? If you need background noise, turn on a radio or some music

DS has been watching tv since he was 2 months old. He's 4 months old now and you can say his name and he will look at you. I personally don't care about the whole "its not good for them" thing. Honestly my mom raised us on watching tv and I'm fine and so is my brother. I was a straight A student in school.
His pedi told me that he can watch tv but they would prefer I put on live action shows rather than cartoons because he will probably mimic live action shows better than a cartoon.

Well yeah lol. I actually don't watch much TV, aside from Dexter and Walking Dead. I think I have a google addiction, and when I read that TV is linked to delayed cognitive behavior and speech I freaked out for a minute. But now that my common sense is back, I get that it's not that big of a dig.

That's crazy that live action is better than cartoons. I would've have guessed that.

my 21 month old has been watching tv since he was a little baby and hes so smart he knows his abc already. My 2 month old will watch tv sometimes when something catches his attention he loves sesame street. I think as long as its age appropriate it doesnt matter

Mine have always noticed the tv since as long as I can remember. I try to keep it off when they are around. It encourages me to interact with them more anyways.
