Kids making their own food?

posted 24th Nov
When did your kids start making their own food? Not like, using the oven or stove.
But using the microwave, making a sandwich, etc?

DS is 5 1/2. Well, almost. I screwed up my foot/ankle horribly, and my husband is at work.

Am I terrible for considering telling him how to use the microwave? He had breakfast and lunch. But he wants popcorn for a snack today and I can hardly walk

At 5 1/2 I think he's old enough to make pop corn in the microwave.

My 3 1/2 yr old loves popcorn...I let her push the "popcorn" button on our microwave. I don't see a problem with it at all.
They only thing that would make me nervous about it would be her removing it so I don't let her do that(it being hot and all)but at 5 1/2 I think your DS will be fine.

He is. I mean, I know it. But I feel bad having him do it
Or I'm afraid he'll burn himself

We don't have a popcorn button   Worried he'll accidentally put it in for 30 minutes instead of 3 or something

My son loves when i let him use the microwave. He started using it at your sons age hes 7 now & is helping his 4 and a half year old sister learn how. I started letting him when he was able to identify numbers & reach the buttons. I sit at the table so i can see if he makes a mistake or not. Our old microwave had colored buttons for clear start so he would press red if he had to start over & green to start it. Now they have to know the letters so its s to start it & r to start over.

I've told my daughter how to use the microwave at that age and she knows how to make a sandwich. He's not too young and may like that independence.

I wouldn't stress. 5 is old enough to use a microwave, as long as you tell him how to do it. I used to make my own ramen noodles in the microwave when I was his age. One time we caught my youngest brother 6 years old at about 5 o clock in the morning, making biscuits as a surprise breakfast in the kitchen. Idk how he managed to get the stove time right, but he had it preheated & everything. Luckily he dropped something & woke my mom up before he could attempt to put it in the oven.

Lol, not saying using the stove is a good idea just yet. But this topic made me think of that & I figured I would share.
