How much power over your life ...

... should parents actually have? As an adult how much of your life, home, work, and parenting decisions should your own parents be allowed to dictate?

A big huge 0%. I have my own house there for I have my own rules etc to follow. If they don't like it oh well.
I've never had them say anything about my parenting(other than praise) and they wouldn't do anything that I don't approve of.

absolutely zero. with the exception that as a courtesy I try to have the house spotless when she visits, and food here that I know she likes.

My mother has almost complete control of my life despite me being 29, owning my own home, and having a career. She decides what furniture I'm going to buy, what my son wears, if I haven't called her by 10pm every night she starts blowing my phone up in a panic. She's around every evening and on the weekends it can be up to 8 times a day. She judges me constantly on my cleaning and gardening, and is constantly upset that I don't follow her standards.

No offence but its time to grow a pair.... Is there a reason that your moms so demanding. I understand taking advice but she picks out your furniture & clothes!! stand up for yourself & seriously what can she do, ground you & send you to your room

my mom and I talk about half an hour to an hour once a week. I'd love to see more of her.. but she lives in FL and I'm in MN. (oh.. about a 26 hour drive or a 3 hour flight plus 3 hour drive to airport)

The one time in the past four years that I have asked her to leave she sent my disabled father round to bash the door down and threaten us with eviction and taking my son away (we rent to buy from them though we have contract). I was then told that I had no respect for everything they had done for me, that my mental illness was made up, and that I was going to cause my dad to have a heartattack

They are emotionally holding you ransom.
My parents stopped making decisions for me when I turned 18.
They offer there opinion an I respect that but it's my life.

What would happen if they evicted you? That might be your best bet, otherwise she will continue to walk all over you.

I would be on the streets .. I've been bankrupt so I can't get a mortgage for another 4 years. The wait lists on rentals here are into the hundreds (housing is horrific here). And one of my best friends is currently is serious financial ruin and lives in a tiny studio apartment, and the other still lives with his parents. All SO's family live a 6 hour flight away (4 day drive) and all my extended family are in england.
