Children with weak gag-reflex

posted 23rd Nov
My 3yo has the weakest gag reflex. I've never met another child like her. She will see something with a texture she doesn't like and starts gagging until she pukes. She does it when she's mad, when she's sad, when she smells something weird (and it doesn't matter where we are when this happens!) I have no idea what to do with her! Do I ignore it? I've tried to talk to her about it, but it doesn't make a bit of difference. I'm at a bit of a loss here.

My brother is like that I hate it lol he can't smell nothing stinky or he'll throw up. He doesn't even wipe his butt which I find odd since his undies are dirty. My mom just tells him rush to the toilet, that's the best you could do.

her big sister is high functioning autistic with sensory seeking tendencies. However, DD2 is totally neurotypical and this is relatively new behavior for her. Just started over the summer. And the smurfing gag sound she makes omg.. It's absolutely just AWFUL...

I can relate. I would probably try to ignore it, do you think it might be attention seeking?

Is it certain textures? I can't eat mashed potatoes, or anything like that. It has always made me gag. DD just doesn't like certain foods, and will gag on them, but she is a bit of a drama queen. My parents never forced me to eat anything with the texture they knew I hated, since it would only end up back in my plate. If it's certain things, I wouldn't worry. If it's like, everything, maybe talk to her pedi about a sensory issue.

See I'm not sure. She does it when she smells something gross. Or like if she doesn't want to eat something. She'll fight and fight taking a bite and then once I finally get her to take one she does it but she'll keep it down.. It's just the freaking sound she makes that nearly makes ME gag. It's awful. She doesn't really eat a whole lot as it is. Typical toddler behavior, asking for something then not wanting it type deal. But since over the summer she's been gagging herself when she doesn't want it anymore. Now it seems like.. I dunno like she would do it for attention before but now it's like second nature.. Does that make sense? It's so frustrating.

My sister did the same thing right around that age. Anytime she would smell any food she'd start gagging and throw up. We were at dairy queen once and she puked tons all over the place, it was horrible. She just kind of grew out of it.

I'd call that a strong gag reflex. Thats what my son does. He has SPD and his texture issues are horrible. He works with his OT twice a week and it seems to be helping with touching but not so much with the eating part
