Workouts at the gym?

I'm getting a gym membership next month. I got a 7 day guest pass and started using it today. I loved it! But I totally felt clueless/lost while I was exercising.


What are good machines/workouts to do? I am trying to lose weight and generally get into better shape/be more confident with how I look. I have been doing light exercise off and on for the last few months, so I know not to jump into an extreme workout routine just yet  

I am open to try anything that will help me tone up and get in shape

Do you get a consult with a trainer when you sign up? My gym does it. And they will show you what to do to meet your weightloss/toning goals

I didn't even ask   I was kind of overwhelmed lol. But I'll see if I can have someone help me out, but the thought of a trainer kinda scares me   I don't want someone telling me what to do.
