Odd ? about autism and self exploration

posted 23rd Nov
Or lack of actually.

We were discussing this at my support group last night. A kid touching themselves is such a normal part of development, but it occurs to me that my 5 year old (with autism) never has. He's not would I would say is severe, and while he has sensory issues he craves stimulation, not avoids it (as far as touch goes).

It's an odd thing to bring up, but I wonder if it's something I should mention to his doctors. He's only touched his penis a few times, and then he would pull it forcefully, it would hurt and he would stop.

i don't know because i don't know much about autism...but i wouldn't think that would be such a bad thing. or something i would worry about really..
because he could end up liking it too much and you could have trouble getting him not to do it...since you said he craves stimulation. it may just freak him out but it could all change when he gets older.

I don't know anything about autism, but my 4 year old daughter hasn't really touched herself either and she hasn't been diagnosed with anything out of the ordinary.

Maybe some kids just don't, autism or not?

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to figure out. I think he has some hormone issues (not tested though yet because they see no reason too, but I think something is going on) and I guess the lack of doing it raises that concern.

I don't know much about autism but my 4.5 year old has never explored herself either. I don't know if it would be a concern or not but just something that may occur?

My six year old has sensory issues and some behavioral issues as well as some other issues but hasn't been officially diagnosed with autism. He hasn't explored himself either. I thought it was kind of odd because there is no touching and no questions about his male parts either.

Well of course you want to make sure you're child is on track with his development! I'm just not sure that this would be a factor either way.

Yeah, I just wasn't sure because I've never heard of a kid NOT touching.

It's almost like he doesn't even notice it's there though. Like he's not aware of that body part.

Well at least I know I'm not alone

My 3 yr old is constantly yanking the darn thing! I didnt notice Kieran DIDN'T touch it until my youngest wouldnt stop and I thought "Hmmmm.... we missed a step there somewhere."

He's approx 2 yrs behind where he should be. I'm a little afraid that he will start up in the next year or so, and that would be awkward because of school.

Yeah my son handles it to use the bathroom and he washes it with a washcloth but beyond that, he doesn't even act like it's there at all. He never tugs on it, plays with it, none of that. I have an 8 month old daughter who scratches her labia more than my son has ever touched his penis. And she's only done that during diaper changes if she's red. Lol. But this is his second year of elementary school and he's still showing no interest in it. So your son may never explore it. Who knows?
