How to get a puppy prepared for the baby?
posted 23rd Nov
I'm 24weeks pregnant and have a 6month old staffy puppy, she is good as gold and the most loving dog you'll meet. She is good with young children because the women I got her off had young children and my puppys mother is so good tempered with the children. But I am just wondering what I can do to get her more used to having a baby around all the time and how to introduce them when my little man is here? I know I got awhile but I'd like to know anyone else who has had a baby, and owns a dog. Thanks

Just make sure you train the puppy basic commands. That's all you really can do.

When your baby is first born they will put a hat on him before cleaning him up. Ask to keep that hat, then when you get home take the hat and put it on one of the babies things like carseat, swing, floor mat etc.

Doll that cries, YouTube vid of baby crying, introduce dog to baby items to smell n get familiar with. I finished the baby room w my 1st n let each dog in to smell the crib n explore. Got them used to me carrying the carseat n pushing the stroller, took them for walks w a baby doll in the stroller. We went to parks where kids play, etc. brought baby home n introduced them 1 by 1 to baby. My oldest dog was protective n curious who would be holding baby making sure they didn't hurt her. He's like that w each baby we bring into the house.

Sorry hit enter. This is what they had me do. It prepares your dog, they will sniff it and know it's a baby. Idk how/if it works, seemed to make my dog pretty chill and protective of my kid lol

She knows the basics aswel as some extras she is just so excitable and I'm always with her, so I'm abit worried she might get jealous when the babies here :/

Just spend time w her before baby comes but chances are she can smell the hormone n knows what's coming.

I think she does she is very protective of me but not my partner. And she never jumps on my belly or anything she just puts her head on my belly and listens then falls asleep

basic commands is a must... And one thing that most parents forget.... After baby is born, the day before you go home, have someone bring a blanket of shirt that baby has worn, and put it where the puppy will smell it. That way puppy can get used to it before baby comes home. I did this with my super awesome cat. When I brought DD home, he came up to her, rubbed a little and head butt her (a sign of affection in cats). <3 It was so sweet! He hasn't left her side since. <3

I visited my mom when I 5eks w my 2nd n her female shep mix knew. She always laid her head in my lap or put her paw up on my belly. As I got bigger it was more of the same til baby kicked her :p that dogs face was priceless! W each pregnancy my female Maltese poodle mix will get real lovey n wanna lay on my belly, kicked or not she don't care. I asked on a dog forum n was told dogs can smell the hcg hormone.

There is really no way you can completely prepare a dog for the baby's arrival until it actually happens. You can expose her to children and babies so she can get used to them but a baby in her house 24/7 taking all your time and attention will be much different.
Chances are since she is good and is so young, things will pretty much go on without any real troubles. maybe a little jealousy when you are holding/feeding baby, but things will adjust in no time.
