Ibuprofen isn't working..

posted 23rd Nov
LO is 14 months and is soo sick....was up all night crying with a runny nose, cough, chills, dry heaving, and a fever of 102.3. Took her to the doc this morning and of course...it's "viral". (Which in my opinion is what they tell you when they don't know what the smurf else it is)...but he said lots of fluids and rest. Which...the fluids are fine but she won't rest. My biggest complaint is he said to give either ibuprofen or motrin every 4 hours to keep the fever under control. We've been doing that...and it's not doing much. It's keeping it under control but no matter what it's staying steady around 100.1-100.8....is this something I should be concerned about or is the fever just being a pain in the ass?

She's snacking well, drinking well, and wetting diapers. She's just very fussy and a bit lethargic. Keeps laying down with her juice cup on the floor, lays when playing with toys, crawls instead of walks short distances.

I feel so damn helpless.

Motrin IS Ibuprofen... are you sure he didn't say to alternate Tylenol (Acetaminophen) and Motrin?

It's a relatively low grade fever. It's a good thing. It means her immune system is working. It's fighting off whatever has her down.

If its viral best bet is to let it take its course. There is alot of viral things going around. Colds are viral and can cause you to run a fever.

yeap my dad, me and both LO's are sick.   I am just letting A run her fever so hopefully she gets over it. Just praying it isn't pneumonia again but she isn't wheezing or hacking away so I don't think it is.

Ha... I was just checking. I mean 100/ 100.8 really isn't that bad and as long as she's snacking, drinking and wetting diapers I'd just let her be... the virus will run it's course and the fever is helping the body fight whatever is going on. You could also try a lukewarm bath... that might help.

That's why I took Zo to the docs this morning. She was kinda breathing funky this morning so it had me flipping out. Doc said her lungs were clear, thank goodness!

Hope you guys all feel better! Praying I don't catch this, we have a tendancy to pass stuff back and forth a while in my house.

Yeah, we're letting her nap then probably giving her a soak in the tub. I can't imagine how she feels. I turn into such a wimp when I'm sick! She's dealing with it like a champ, lol.

DD has had a fever since Monday on and off hers has mostly range from 102-103 and got up to 104 2 days ago. We have been giving her Infants Advil and Tylenol every 4 hours when its need but I refrain from giving it to her unless her fever gets above 102ish so her body has a chance to fight it. When I think its gone her stubborn fever comes back. Thinking dd has Roseola once again now that she has a rash.

If your LO's fever isn't going away she is still fighting whatever she has.

Yeah, her fever is 103.4 right now so we ran to get Tylenol instead of Ibuprofen since that's obviously not working. She's so miserable it makes me want to cry.

Yeah before this sick go around we never had to alternate meds. I would just give her Motrin and it would do the trick. But Wednesday the Advil would only keep her temp down 1/2 degree for 2 hours then would go back up so we alternated the 2 and it seem do help keep it down a lot better.

IMO Tylenol doesn't do a good job keeping fevers down compared to Motrin/Advil
