Whichever camera you get, I'd suggest a 50mm 1.8 to start off.
Photographers call it the "nifty fifty" for a reason. It's fast, great in low light, and allows you to get awesome 'bokeh' (background blurring), because of the wide aperture and DOF.

If you're a beginner, the 50 will serve you well for a long time.

Check out Adorama.com and BHPhoto.com. Not sure if they're having any sales right now, but they'll definitely have all you need.

With a 50 it doesn't really matter.
*I* am partial to Nikon. They feel better in my hands than Canon do. They are more user friendly(They have a whole guide mode that will tell you what every button on your camera will do)

What's your budget?

I'd go with these
http://www.adorama.com/INKD5100A.html
http://www.adorama.com/NK5018GU.html

That leaves you enough to get a tripod, some props and a nice bag.

I'm partial to Nikon... I have the 3100 and I love it! But... I have never owned a Canon so I can't really compare the two

Well it's not a matter of which is better, the D won't work with any Nikon considered "entry level". D90 and up can work with the D but don't get a D90 it's old.

Definitely. It's got a better sensor too, so you're pictures will look much nicer.

  No problem!
