Dr checking you?

A girl I know, her water broke yesterday. Early AM. I asked her late last night if she had her baby yet (via facebook) since she didn't post anymore updates. She said no so I asked her how many centimeters she was & how thinned.
She replied back saying she was only checked once (when she first got there, from my understanding) because they don't want to give her an infection from checking her too much.

Is that true? When I was in the hospital with DD, they constantly checked me after my OB broke my water. Could you really get an infection from being checked? Probably a dumb question. But I'm curious since I've never heard that before.

When I was in the hospital my water was breaking not broken (they didn't break it for me since I was only 35w) they were checking me all the time. Once my water finally fully broke the checked me twice (only took me a hour to get from 7cm to 10) I have never heard about getting an infection from bring checked too much.

It was the case at my hospital. They only checked me if they reeeally needed to, to reduce risk of infection.

They are reluctant to check you too many times here because of risk of infection. My waters broke at the beginning of my labour and they checked me when I came in and I was 3cm, and then wouldn't again for a long time.

They only checked me when I insisted I was ready to push and they told me I was 8cm. Even then they didn't want to check me because they didn't think I was much further on.

They checked me a lot but one midwife said "I don't have to check you for another 4 hours and I really can't be bothered" when I said I felt the ring of fire. After plenty of eye-rolling she checked and his head was there. She was a bitch - who starts a conversation about stillbirth during labour?! SHE did! I was terrified.

I never knew that. I had a very, very short labor (about 3 hrs start to finish). So maybe it seemed like a lot to me.
I just thought it was strange since she's been in the hospital since like 9/10 am (east coast time) and its now past 5am.

I guess you learn something new everyday

Anddddd, I wouldn't be using her for a midwife again.

In the UK you have no choice - whoever is appointed to you is your midwife on the day, I had never met her before and had 7 midwives in total during my labour.

That's strange. I guess everywhere is different!
Hopefully you'll never have her again.
Why would someone bring up such a scary/sensitive subject during labor? I don't get people!

She was insane. She told me I HAD to have an epidural and arranged it but I was too tired to complain after being left on my own overnight with no help with a high-risk pregnancy and she says "Some women can't handle it, I gave birth twice with just gas & air, I guess I'm stronger!" - at that point I had to jump in and tell her "whoopty smurfing doo, probably the lack of braincells". My husband's face was a picture but at that point I had just had enough of her stupid chatter.

Next time I've arranged to travel 35 miles away to give birth.

What a bitch! I would have made a complaint!

I was only checked twice in 26 hours, once before and once after water break.

which hospital was this? gosh i will be sooo mad

I was checked 3 times when my water broke. Once when I first got to the hospital, once about 6 hours into labor. I was 4cm dilated at that point, but they had to check again 20 minutes later because I felt like LO was trying to come out already, sure enough I was 10cm. I went from 4 to 10cm in 20 minutes, no joke.


I have heard of the risk for infection. The water sacks keep the baby safe and isolated.

it is true my water broke on its own at home with my son when i went to the hospital they checked me then i didnt get checked til later that night and again the next morning i was in labor for 35 hours and its true u can get an infection from being checked to often after your water breaks
