Did I handle this wrong?

posted 22nd Nov
So I will start off by saying DS is 4 months old with a bad milk protien allergy and on Nutramigen. He has also caught my cold.

So at Thanksgiving dinner my MIL was upset because we werent feeding him mashed potatos and gravey. Then my husband and I ran some errands and when we got back she said that he got stuffy after drinking his bottle and the milk is making him to congested so we need to take him off formula for a few days and only give him juice or something... naturally, I laughed. Now she is really pissed off at me. Was I wrong to assume she had to be joking?

No way! My DD has an awful milk protein allergy too, and I would have thought someone was joking if they suggested what your MIL did.

well milk really does make congestion worse. but the nutramigen is broken down quite a bit.. but i don't know if that would lessen the effects it could have on his cold..
and i don't think you should lower a 4 month old's intake of the formula, especially for a few days

and so i think she was just a little misinformed.
but the mashed potatoes thing..did she just forget he was allergic to milk?

My MIL has done that several times...ice cream, mashed potatoes, cake...
ugh.

Thats what I was thinking but she kept saying things like "No really the formula is making it worse, you need to stop giving it to him till he gets better" **shakes head** I mean I am getting kind of worried about his breathing and will probably be taking him in tomorrow just to make sure his lungs arnt too bad but I highly doubt its the milk doing it.

Since its not animal milk I dont think it would cause cogestion in the first place but she wasnt saying lower milk intake she was saying cut it out.

Not wrong at all. You should never stop feeding your baby without a doctors supervision and advice. That's absurd. And juice is a huge no no. Especially from a bottle. Unless of course he was constipated and under the doctors advice and supervision.

This is typical behavior for her. When my DD was 6 months old (also very bad milk protien allergy) she was constantly giving her ice cream, chai tea, etc...

I would have laughed, too. When DS was an infant a relative of DH's told me to stop "sticking a boob" in his mouth and to feed him a mixture of whole milk and applesauce. I definitely laughed.

Thats what I was thinking. I have given him very watered down juice twice and both were because of sever constipation.
