7 month old, formula question.

posted 22nd Nov
If your baby is/was formula-fed, do you recall how many ounces per bottle they took at 7 months and how often? Felix has been having about 4 ounces in each bottle, every 3-4 hours. This has been going on since...4 months, I think? So we haven't upped it in quite a while because he ends up wasting it if we try 5+ at a time.

That said, though, he also wakes up 3-5 times a night still to eat, but only an ounce or so at a time and then he's back to sleep. I assume it's pointless but is there any way to get him to eat more in one sitting so he isn't up all night for just a little bit to eat at a time?

We've tried getting him to eat more just before bed, even have tried some solids about an hour or so before he goes to sleep, but all that does is end in him pooping during the night and getting pissed off when I change him, heh.

ETA: I don't really mind getting up with him but I don't think he's getting good sleep when he's constantly waking up, you know?

Solids before bed won't help him sleep all night, unfortunately lol.
At 7 months I believe B was eating 6 ounces every 4ish hours. We had a Dr. Brown's formula pitcher that was really great for when she was drinking an odd amount of milk because I made 1 batch of formula for the whole day and just kept it in the fridge.
Anyways, she was still waking up to eat at night, but she'd drink the whole bottle usually. Not much you can do to make him eat more, his tummy is still pretty small and some babies don't ever drink more than 6-7 ounces in one sitting.

DD has been drinking 6 ounces every 3-5 hours since she was 3 months old. I don't know what to tell you regarding trying to get him to eat more. I tried upping her formula/solid intake and she refuses to pay attention long enough to the solids and she still spits the bottle out at 6 oz so that's a waste. It might just be something you have to deal with, unfortunately.

My baby is breast fead but he was like yours at that age. Waking at night and just wanting to eat a little and go back to sleep. I don't know the amound of course becuase it was the breast but it was about as often as with your LO. I was never sure if my LO was waking for food or just the comfort of nursing. I am sure that your LO also gets comfort from the bottle.

Anyway if the baby is waking and needing comforting then I don't think you can change that. But if it is hunger then I think you just need to keep the baby awake longet to eat more.If you see your LO starting to fall back to sleep maybe just rub LOs back a little and encourage more food.

What do you think.... if you LO waking for food or comfort from the bottle?

Very good point. I feel like I haven't done this in forever, and it's only been a few months
I did have to rub B's foot or back if she'd fall asleep eating in the middle of the night, and it helped her not wake as frequently. She also uses a paci so that seemed to cut back wake ups as well.

For us when we did not give our LO a paci he started to use his fingers instead. It made me so happy because I did not have to worry about always having a paci around

I think you should try giving a big feeding before bed then at the first waking if it is more than 4 hours later rub LO feet a little to keep him eating. Then if he wakes up before 4 hrs again maybe try just the paci because this time LO might just want to suckle. Then then next time LO should be really hungry again so try with the back rubbing to get LO eating a little more

That is what I would try, I use the boob but it still works about the same. Some times I can tell that LO is really hungry at night and other times just sucks a few seconds and wants to sleep

Hum... you could even try the paci first and see if LO goes back to sleep or if LO fusses and rutes for food

Im prpobably super late but if this helps DS drank 4 oz every 3-4 hours until now and he is 10 months. Also he wakes up several times during the night too! He also eats a few ounces before dozing off. I always feed him solids before bed so that doesnt work, I didnt expect it to. Someone told me to try cereal but Im against it =/.

I forgot to mention DS was Breastfed until he was 6 months so Im not sure how much he was drinking but when I pumped and gave him a bottle it was 6 oz and he would only drink 4 everytime. He is 10 months now and will drink 6oz sometimes 8. Its normally over a an hour though so I would still say 4 oz, but if I give him a 10oz sippy cup that would last him about 2 hours and he drinks it on and off.

My five month old twins (who are premies and adjusted would only be about 4 mos) are eating five 6 oz bottles per day. They skip an ounce here and there, but eat about 27-28 total in a day. We have gradually increased the bottle size over the past several months. It takes a lot of trial and error and wasted formula. I found it worked best when I increased only the first and last bottle of the day first by an ounce. Then I increased the ones in the middle when they were used to drinking the higher amounts. They have been sleeping through the night since 4 months old. Hope that helps!
