Breast feeding 5 day old

posted 22nd Nov
Okay, so I usually feed him every 2 hours. But I only feed him on one boob and he only wants to latch on and suck for about 10 minutes and then he refuses to latch on anymore. Is this too short of a time? He always seems full and content afterward

Just feed on demand

Not a schedule. Let him suck as much or as little as he wants

Unless he is losing weight, there isn't a problem

that is fine. by daughter never fed that long either, some are quick some arent. You would be surprised how much milk they can get in 10 mins, And at 5 days old they dont need much at a time anyways to be satisfied.

I just got nervous because at the doctor they were saying do 20-25 on one side then 5-10 on the other and I wasn't getting anywhere near that lol

i only ever did one side at a time when i was breastfeeding. Just worked for me that way, unless she was super hungry then i switched.

Thats fine. At 5 days old their tummies are teeny so 10mins would be filling. Feed on demand. My son was like that and for a few weeks i fed him every 1-2hrs

Congrats on your new son

Once he latches on and sucks for a minute or so, If you see the tell tale "gulping/swallowing" (usually long "drawn out type" sucking) then a 10 minute nursing may just be sufficient enough for your little guy if he's feeding every 2hrs.
If you are not fully emptying your breast after each feeding, you can try pumping and save for later. Once he's had his 1st check up and you know he's gaining weight, then you will know his 10 minute feedings are good enough for now.

As far as only nursing on one side, keep trying the other, he will eventually get with the program, 2 of my newborns favored my right side until I tried the football hold...worked beautifully. Most important thing is to get each breast empty, wether thru nursing or pumping.

Hope this helped
