When my sons had long hair I use to slick it back

Pony tail, gel?
My sons hair is long enough to put in a pony tail but not braid yet. Awkward stage gets pony tailed or geled. Sometimes just conditonerized so the curls lock.

If it gets real crazy, pony tail, but he's just a kid. Crazy hair is fine!
