ultrasound at 36 weeks... normal?

posted 22nd Nov
So, I had a doctors appointment today, same old same old, weight, pee, blood pressure, and she also felt my belly to see what position the baby was in (head down and bum in my ribs). She told me that she wants to see me this weekend to do a strep b test and an ultrasound. She asked me if my husband has weekends off from work and I told her he does so she was like "ok this is what I want to do. I'm going to have you come in this saturday for your strep b test and an ultrasound. Since your hubby has the weekends off he will be able to go to the ultrasound with you and see the baby" She mentioned that she wants to know for sure what position he is in and where his head is positioned. Needless to say I am super excited about seeing my baby, what he looks like, get a better idea of how big he is at this point, etc. So, I guess my question is, is this a normal reason to schedule an ultrasound? When I told my mom and some female family members, they all responded by asking me "why are they giving you an ultrasound NOW? Is there something wrong with the baby?" My doctor would have told me if she thought there was something wrong with him right??

I had an ultrasound at 36 weeks too, they wanted to make sure she was head down and to estimate her weight. She was healthy and always had been.

It depends on the doctor. Some will do an ultrasound to make sure the baby is in the right position. My doc just felt my belly and said it was good enough. I personally would have loved another ultrasound to see her again before she was born

oh good. thanks girls! I was so excited when she told me that I was going in to have the U/S but then when my family was asking what was wrong it really freaked me out. So happy that I can go into this with the original excitement I felt!!

My Dr is very old school he is like 75 so he doesn't do anything unnecessary. Hell he didn't even push a d&c with my second pregnancy. We waited 5 weeks hoping my body would do it naturally. I got sick of puking for no good reason though. Then we found out that the placenta and sac were still growing even though the baby wasn't so it became medically necessary.

I've never had one at 36 weeks, but that doesn't mean that it's not normal for some doctors. While I was in labor with my 2nd son the doctor came in and felt my stomach and told me that my baby was 8lbs (he was 8lbs exactly). I've always seen midwives, so they were pretty good at feeling exactly what position the baby was in and the size. I wouldn't worry. You are 36 weeks so it won't be long now, and since the strep b has to be done, they probably just want to double check the position since you could really go next week or anytime after. Good luck, and have a great Thanksgiving!

Totally normal, I had one as well. Just see it as another chance to see your womb fruit before they come into the world

I had 3 babies lay partial breech (transverse) she ordered the U/S for position & weight! She is doing this right away because if baby is breech or partially than they can perform a uterine Inversion ! I went as far as being scheduled for one then she turned 3 days before! GL
