They look great IMO! Like someone else pointed out, some look a bit instagramish - less color editing and they would look less so. :-) I'm guessing the color edits are iPhone pics.

This. I mean if he can take pics like these on a DSLR than I would say def. go for it. I know that if someone were to show up at a shoot and pulled out their phone to take pics with I would laugh at them and leave lol.

I didn't know cell phones could take such good pics.

I can see that. He does have quite a few photos that aren't quite in focus. I tried to pick his best. He discovered one day that he loves taking pictures and it relaxes him

Yes, I believe those ones are. lol He doesn't have a photo editing program at all, so unless it's been edited with Instagram or something, his photos are like that when he takes them.

Quoting The Devil's Squeekerz:" Yup! That one is his phone alright. haha. So is the one of the cups and this one as well: "
I was going to guess the cups as well. Something about the harshness of the colors. But like I said still pretty pics and nothing to be ashamed of but if he really is serious about being a photographer than he would need to get an actual camera and learn it.

How would he go about working on focusing and composition? He's never taken a class or anything. I don't know anything about the professional level. I've always just been a point, shoot, and sometimes get lucky kind of person.

Even with it being out of focus it is still beautiful. He is really great, has he tried to create a blog or something selling his photos? I really think a lot of people would be interested in them.

lol Yeah. I'm not sure how confident he is in his abilities at the moment. He does it because he loves it as a hobby, but he has started to think he wants to be a photographer. What's the difference between the camera he uses (when it's not his iphone) and a DSLR?

learn different focusing techniques with his camera, like focal points, or manual focusing.

for composition, have him look up and read about 'the rule of thirds'

I don't think he's even considered that, actually. Maybe I should tell him to make a FB page and blog? What site would be good for a blog for that??

Well I know DSLRs let you go into manual mode not sure about the one he has. If you can't shoot in manual I wouldn't consider you a professional. I'm not a professional though so I don't know much to tell him. I do have a DSLR but I just learn more about it all the time.

Thank you! I think he's slowly teaching himself. He started taking pictures around half a year ago. I'll let him know about the rule of thirds though.
