Blessing before eating in public school...

posted 21st Nov
I volunteered in my son's thanskgiving day feast for his kindergarten class today. It was very cute, the kids had lots of fun, and I was glad I got to participate.
That being said, before the meal began, which the kids made themselves  , the teacher had them all hold hands and sing a "song of blessing" together. The words were "god bless you, and god bless me, god bless all the folks we see.." etc. I was not happy about it and it made me uncomfortable to see my son basically praying. I didn't say anything though obviously, he was having fun and doesn't really understand the concept of prayer so to him it was just a nice song. But when we got home I did explain why we don't pray to god but that some people do and why. We've already had this talk before, my mother is catholic and constantly talks to him about god, and Christ love even though I've asked her to stop. We've also had conversations about all different religions from Judaism to Buddhism, so he understands what religion is and why a lot of people follow it, and he knows that we as a family are not religious and why.
But I'm thinking about emailing the teacher or principal and just asking them to please keep god out of the classroom where they can.
My husband was actually really upset about him seeing the song in school, and I'm sure he is going to want to speak to someone regardless of what I decide to do, but what would you ladies, who possibly are non religious, feel about it?

I'm religious and that is a no go in my book! Prayer and school are two different things! no need to offend people if you don't have to!

I think it doesn't hurt the kid...To wish someone well isn't harmful but if you want to make a huge deal about sure you can contact the teacher...

well, I guess for me.... it would depend on which god they were singing about.

I understand what you're saying though. If it's a public school, that's inappropriate.

We're atheists and I would talk to the teacher in person and explain why I don't want my child praying, (and the fact that praying in public school isn't supposed to happen). My fiance would probably explode on the teacher.

I don't feel like I would completely blast them. I would certainly tell them my 2 cents worth

A separation of state and religion and this is a breach of that.

I would definitely email them about it. That is a no-no! It's school, not a church!

Its very inappropriate. I would e mail someone and talk to his teacher. Religion and school are two different things!

I think you should really say something. I'm Christian and we pray, but that doesn't mean everyone around me is or does.

Be polite and not pushy about it, just ask that it doesn't happen again, please.

We for me i probably should have mentioned this as well, but before she had them sing their song she went around the room and had everyone say what they were thankful for. And when she went she said "I am thankful that Jesus Christ has given us such a beautiful day for our feast". And I've heard my son mention other things she has said in reference to god or Christ. This song was kind of the tip of the ice burg. And I really don't like it. I want my munchins to know about religion but from a neutral stance, not from a someone who is a full on believer and speaks about it as if it's fact.

I don't see why they have to have God in it, I agree. I would speak to someone I think. I am Christian myself, my children pray before they eat, but I would still be uncomfortable with them praying as a whole in a classroom in public schools. Not for my kids, obviously, idc if they pray to God, but for other children, such as your child. IDK if I can describe the way I feel correctly so bare with me lol. For me, it would be like my child in a classroom where they were praying to fairies, or something. It wouldn't be harmful to my child, no, but that is not what we believe, and it is using religious or spiritual acts in the classroom. I don't want my kids participating in something like that in a public school, it can be exclusion.

I would definitely say something especially when it isn't the first time!

Meh..not a big deal to me.

I think it's BS that they took the pledge of allegiance out of schools.

I'm not "religious" either, I do however believe in God, but I'm not religious.

That teacher would be in trouble here. The only time religion is allowed in school is when it's an after school club and the children make their own decision to join or not to join.
