Is he colicky?

posted 21st Nov
DS is 5 weeks and 4 days... He is EBF.

DS seems to be fussy more than happy. When he is really fussy the only thing that soothes him is the breast. He clusterfeeds practically everynight for 4hours... and clusterfeeds for 2hours in the morning. I offer him the boob because otherwise he would cry.

DS refuses a pacifer and seems offended when we offer it to him. The swing and bouncer does NOT comfort him but he will sit in it for a short period if he is already calm.

DS does not respond positively to white noise but will fall asleep to his dad singing and rocking him. Other than that, the only solution is the boob.

We are at his grandparent's house and they keep saying how none of their kids were like that and that something is wrong with him. I know he is a fussy baby but I just figured he was high needs and likes what he likes.

Do you think he has colic?

He doesNOT scream at the same time of day, everyday, for a period of hours... but I almost wonder if I didnt give him the boob if he would.

If he does have colic -- what are some tips to soothe him? White noise, baby wearing, swing/bouncer does not work unless he is already calm and rocking only works after he just finished eating (for the millionth time) and needs help falling asleep.

xx
TIA

It's hard to say, but the S's can work for a fussy baby... they are 1. swaddling 2.side/stomach position 3.swinging 4. shushing 5. suckling. Other things are that "superman" hold which can also be good for gas. I had colic and I'm pretty sure that with colic they can't be consoled no matter what. If you're concerned it could be something more (GERD or colic) I'd talk to the pediatrician but honestly, you know your child best so if you think he's fine there's a good chance he is.

Yeah. The commentary made me look more at whats going on and I realize now (which i'm embarrassed to say I didnt really focus before) my baby doesn't sleep enough so when he gets overtired he gets really fussy. He has trouble taking daytime naps and maybe sleeps a total of 8-10 hour/day (he is 6 week old). We are focusing on trying to help him sleep more before he gets overtired.

Thank you!!

Oh that sounds like a great plan! Our little guy's mood changed SO MUCH (for the better) when he started getting more sleep. His temperament was okay before, kind of on the fussy side, then we started doing nap routines and getting him to sleep more and he turned into a different baby. Much happier, much more easy going. Sleep is a miracle worker. They need it, we need it. Good luck, I hope that it goes well for you guys!

It wouldn't hurt to give lo some medicine for it. If you think that's what it is.
