False Blood Test

Has anyone ever had a pregnacy blood test come back as negative but really was pregnant? If so, did you have it done before your missed period or after?

I think if they happened it would only be false due to human error.

That would be impossible unless you had a blood test done before you had implanted. Otherwise blood tests are not wrong. Urine tests could be but not blood.

Exactly...only other way is human error...like test mix up.

The blood test works the same way a urine test does. You need to have a certain amount of hCG present to be detected.

I assume you're NOT talking about a quantitative test, of course.

I don't really know what I'm talking about! I'm not due for my period until Friday-Saturday and I ovulated a little later I think, but my doctor said to take a blood test early and the nurse called me with the results and said it was negative. She wouldn't tell me if there was anything found even if it was low... I asked her because it was before my missed period does this mean a for sure negative and she just replied, negatives are negatives and wouldn't give me a number. Just wondering if there is a chance my number was low enough (if implantation was longer, etc)to be considered negative, but 3 days from now would be high enough were they say positive or should I just drop hope for this month?

If you are pregnant as soon as the baby implants that hormone starts to rise so unless it happened before implantation then it was probably a true negative.

Wit my last son I had three blood test done and took about 6 home test n all said - .. I kept going to the doctors because I was just so sick and all the test came back - ..then my doctor said she wanted to give me a ultrasound to check my galballder n stuff come to find out I was 12weeks.. doctors thought maybe miscarriage cuz the blood test wouldn't show anything went back in two weeks for another scan n blood draw n finally the blood test was + n baby was doing great..I still don't know y it took so long to show up on the blood test..but it can happen

sounds like they did just a positive or negative test - same thing you would do with a home test. They probably didn't measure your hormone level (a quantitative hcg).

If your period isn't late yet, then it's entirely possible you tested too early. Wait to test again AFTER your missed period.

I didn't know they did it that way. My doc always does quantitative. OP I would call and ask!

That's what I was wondering, the girl was VERY difficult on the phone - she's not my usual nurse so she wouldn't give me any information. Part of me wants to call back to try to get to my nurse and ask her.

I just really have that feeling right now... but I guess I could be wrong - didn't think mothers could be wrong  

If they didn't do a quantitive do I have to go back in or is it something that they still have in their system they just didn't look at those results?

I work in the medical field. It is not possible for your blood to be lacking hCG while pregnant. The hCG directly enters your blood stream from the baby/placenta and facilitates the other hormonal changes necessary for the baby to grow and your body to sustain the pregnancy. It is rare, but not impossible for the hormone to not excrete out in your urine in any significant level, but not blood.

I had a false blood test with my first baby. It came back negative. I read that large amounts of hormone in your system can throw off even a blood test(too much HCG). My doctor believes this is what happened with me. My periods were irregular at that time in my life, so I wasn't tracking it that way. But I kept fainting, and after seeing a cardiologist and every other doctor under the sun ( Except an OBGYN), 2 weeks later I took a home test and it came back positive. It can happen, and if you really feel you are, wait and have another test done. Best of luck!

That's what happened to me. I asked for the first one it came back no..but I was feeling so sick couldn't keep a thing down went to urgent care they did the urine it said no they said probably the flu .week later still felt the same but no fever nothing went back I'm my doctor sent me for blood work n more urine all test said -.. she didn't know what to tell me ..I called after three more weeks she wanted a stool sample and stuff more urine she said will do more blood work try to find out what's wrong and still nothing..no sighs of what could be making me so sick then she said maybe my galballder and would look at everything and there the baby was the teach asked if I knew I was PG I said no all my test said I wasn't.. that's y I said till this day I don't know y it didn't show up. My doctor couldn't tell me either y she sad to it should have showed up..I'm not a doctor r a tech.I was just sharing my story ..
