TB exposure

posted 21st Nov
How soon after possible tuberculosis exposure can you get tested for it?

On the bus this mom and her daughter were sitting behind us and about 20 minutes into the ride mom gets on the phone and starts telling whoever it was that the doctor thinks the kid has TB and they're on the way to get her tested. This kid was hacking up a lung the whole ride and was not even 3 feet away from us

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and my daughter is 5 if it makes any difference.

Call your local health department, they can advise and set up testing

a lot of people who are exposed to it don't end up developing active TB

This^ I would not worry to much.My Dad has TB and found out while I was in my 1st trimester with twins. He spent a month in isolation but no one he ever came in contact with contracted it.

It's a strange thing. You can have the germ and have it never develop into active TB.. People with compromised immune systems are more prone to it. And also, symtoms of active TB can take as long as YEARS to show up!

I'm waiting for my ob and my daughter's doctor to call back, but you just reminded me we used to have a TB information line. I'm going to google it. Thank you!

I'm not going to risk my daughter's health, my unborn's health, my health, or my job on what "a lot of people" do or don't do. I work with the disabled and several of them have autoimmune deficiencies, I will have to call out on my next work day if I haven't gotten tested by then.

try not to freak out in the mean time, but I would def want the testing done no matter how low the risk

There is no issue with testing at all. If you are the least but nervous of it I would definitely test. I was just stating a fact to hopefully put your mind at ease a bit but by no means am I trying to deter you from testing.

I just don't know what my job is going to do. We can't work if we have a sore throat, they send us to another house. I don't know if they're going to be willing to send me somewhere else for 2 weeks :/
