How do you....

posted 21st Nov
Just curious, for the mommies out there who had newborns with children under the age of 2 or right at 2, how did you do it? I've started worrying about it recently because my little boy is such a handful and I want to BF but I worry I'll be nursing and won't be able to keep him out of things he's not supposed to be in. He climbs on the kitchen table constantly. That's really my main concern. He's already fallen off once and hit his head before I could get him down. So how do you guys keep up with a toddler and take care of an infant at the same time?

For whatever reason I seem to enjoy chaos. I like to stay busy so the closer I get to my due date the more excited I get but there's a part of me that's worried I can't handle it. I'm pretty good at multitasking. Okay, really good, but for some reason I'm still a little nervous lately.

My husband was home for 4 weeks and I just had my oldest cuddle me when i was feeding the baby. There are times I had to interrupt a feeding to address her but for the most part she was pretty good.

It was way easier for me then having just one kid. Dh was going to take 2 weeks off but just took a long weekend since I didn't need him there to help. It has been easy peasy

My husband won't be able to take any time off and that's what has me a little worried. My son hates cuddling or being confined in anyway. He has to go nonstop all the time. I can put a movie on and put him in his playpen and he'll watch the whole thing but I can't stand doing it. I hate putting him in front of the tv and try to do it as little as possible. My husband may be able to use a day or 2 of vacation but that would be it   When our son was born he was off 3 days, I think. I took 5 weeks but it was unpaid and this one will be too. My dad came down from up north last time and stayed for a week and helped me but he probably won't be able to do that again this time. I'm gonna be completely on my own.

If I was nursing, we'd read a book or color. Something quiet that I could do while sitting and with one hand. As for the rest of the time I can't actually remember how I survived. Lol It really wasn't that difficult, you adapt quickly.

I hope that's the case for me haha. I'm really hoping our son will be interested in the baby and will want to spend time around us instead of running off to do every single thing he knows he's not supposed to like he does now the second I look away lol.

Sometimes with a newborn you have a few more movies days until you develop your own routine and schedule. Get a carrier so you can nurse while being on the move. Its hard to explain but its just kinda a natural adjustment.

I wish he would sit and do any kind of activity   He likes to run, pull clothes out of the dressers, empty cabinets (the only and only one with a cabinet lock, anyway), empty my purse and play in the cat food bowl, and climb. Those are about the only things he'll do that keep him occupied longer than 30 seconds or so. He'll play with a NEW toy for 15 or 20 minutes but after that he won't touch it anymore. He also gets incredibly frustrated very quickly if he can't make the toy work the way he knows it's supposed to. Like if he can't fit a square into a round hole or something he gets mad and throws everything within like 10 seconds.

Thanks, guys. My mom keeps saying it's an awful thing going from one to two and I value her opinion almost zero because she was a terrible parent and she's an ignorant sheep but she still gets to me sometimes.

DS turned 2 17 days before his brother was born. SO stayed home with me for two days and then was out of town monday-friday for the first 5 months . I EBF and at the beginning I did feel like all I did was nurse and had little control over my 2 year old (who is also a ball of energy climbing and getting into everything) . It was hard for me at first and I'm not gunna lie, he watched a lot of movies. But once we got into a routine it started to get easier. My house is usually a mess but my kids are happy.

I'll be in the middle of my last semester of college when I have this baby, other wise I wouldn't really be that worried about it.

They make slings for newborns, are those for BFing? If so I'll buy one and be able to nurse while I do homework at night when my husband is home. I'm hoping to get as far ahead as possible in my classes before I have him but I know there's no way I'll be able to finish any of the classes before he's born. I'm just hoping to get far enough ahead that labor and the first couple days in the hospital won't put me too far behind.

Did you guys have your LO with you at the hospital most of the time or were they with someone else during your PP stay? The idea of being away from my son kills me   He's stayed the night other places plenty of times but for some reason this feels different.

My daughter was there for labor and delivery and about 4 hours pp. Then my FIL flew in and stayed the night with her we went home the next morning. My hospital wont allow anyone to stay overnight except 1 person (dad, or other adult support)

I think our hospital has rules like that too, but I'm not sure because with our first my husband was the only one I was worried about staying. My MIL has already said she will take him while I'm in labor and I know someone needs to because he'll be 22 months, he doesn't want to sit around the hospital all day but I'm gonna miss him

I'm pretty sure you can nurse with certain slings. My water broke at 7 in the morning and my sister watched DS for the day. I had baby at 5:51pm and was out of the hospital 2 hours later. So we didn't really spend that much time away from DS. He actually slept with us that night lol

Our hospital requires a 48 hour stay after birth for the newborn. They gave me the option to go home without him and I was like are you nuts?

We managed to get out after like 32 hours but they weren't happy about it. This time I'll probably just stay the 48 hours instead of listen to them bitch.
