Seriously you have to have a pap smear before getting a prescription? That's ridiculous ... when I was on the pill my Doctor gave me month to month prescriptions and would have me come in to see how I was going and then give me another script.

No a general prac you see as much as you need to. But as far as the gynecologist goes, we see them annually unless there's a problem. But we get a whole year's worth of BC prescription from the doc, so by the time we need to ask for more, it's time for another pap smear.

You can do either, but yes. A gynecologist specializes in your lady parts. The general prac is just the family doc and CAN do an exam but they don't specialize in it. MOST are OB/GYNs so they do it all, but some are literally just gynos.

Oh seems odd to me ... here our specialists are only used if something goes wrong, everything else is done through a GP. But then again in our system GP's are 'gateway doctors', you can't just go and book into a specialist on your own.

It depends on your insurance here. Some require a referral from your GP like that and some don't. It also depends on the specialty. Some stuff you can just go get done like OB/GYN. You don't need a GP referral for your lady parts.
