how to build milk back up? help.

posted 20th Nov
What are some ways to build your milk back up? I haven't really pumped/breastfed properly in three-ish days, only like twice a day. I had my son last Tuesday & my milk came in like 4 days ago. I seem to only get an oz when I pump, & he eats 3 oz every 2-3 hours. I've been waiting on an electric pump, but now that I haven't pumped a lot, my boobs don't seem to be filled up. :/ I'm really scared I wont be able to give my son my breast milk, please help

What you pump has nothing to do with your actual supply. Put baby to breast as much as possible, no bottles or pacis. NURSE NURSE NURSE and then NURSE some more.

Pumping is no indication of how much ur producing lots of skin to skin and putting him to the boob just him suckling wile he's asleep will help. If u can buy one a SNS will help too.

This. How much you pump out really tells you NOTHING about how much milk is in there. I was only ever able to pump a couple of ounces, and I had a TON of milk.

Only look at wet diapers to tell you how much milk you are making.

Just put baby to your breast as often as possible. Breast milk production is about supply and demand. The more stimulation, the more milk your breasts will produce.

What's a sns ?
It's hard because he gets frustrated. He'll latch & drink, but then turn away & cry.. so breastfeeding itself is a struggle.
Probably mostly my fault, because I been bottle feeding with formula, mixing it with my breast milk, because breastfeeding was so hard & it broke my heart him screaming from being hungry & not latching on.
Will me letting him latch & suck some & finish off with a bottle help? or should I just try breastfeeding alone?

a sns is a supplemental nursing system. So the baby is still at the breast but drinking formula at the same time. Find a lactation consultant to work with you.

ohh! i have one of those. It's soo hard to use though. Nipple shield seems to help with nursing. So they WILL fill back up though? if I keep stimulating them? Gonna try pumping inbetween breastfeeding, will that help?

Yep you can also try lactation cookies (google recipes), fenugreek, dark beer or brewers yeast, mothers milk tea, blessed thistle. As a last resort there is also a prescription you can order online.

I was one of the few who has supply issues. My milk didnt come in until day 5 and she was still going 12+ hours between wet diapers and loosing weight. By 4 months I was able to EBF but it has been a constant struggle to maintain. Ive pretty done every trick in the book and I can tell you nothing works like letting them nurse. Not just when he is hungry but all the time. Be a pacifier co-sleep if you can and let him latch during the night.

Thats a good point, plus i need to not wait until he's crying to eat, so it doesn't make it so hard for him to latch
I don't believe in co sleeping though, that's too scary for me. but thank you, i appreciate your help. there's hope! yay lol

I couldn't co-sleep either but yes trying to get them on the breast before screaming in hunger helps. Pump one breast while they are nursing (I was never coordinated enough to do this). Def. find a lactation consultant and make sure you have a good support system My husband would always rub my feet for middle of the night feedings instead of offering a bottle. The daddys usually wanna help and their first thought is you are exhausted so let me take this feeding. Dont skip feedings have him change the diaper while you get set up. Have him rub your feet or just comfort you instead of skipping the feeding. Watch youtube videos for latching help and positons. Hope is not lost you can do it just gotta know it will be hard but once you get through these first few weeks and everything regulates its so much easier.
