runners who breastfeed?

posted 20th Nov
I have a 3 year old son and am now pregnant with my second. I breastfed my son as a baby for about 3 months. Well I'd like to breastfeed longer if I can with my second son.. my question is, I enjoy to run daily and I want to know if running daily will be a problem with milk supply?

Ps. I also have a pituitary tumor that CAN grow from the hormones produced by breastfeeding. (although it doesn't always happen) So I will be watched by my doc if I decide and she said if it starts growing I will have to stop BFing.

With the risk of the tumor growing wouldn't it be in your health's best interest to formula feed?

I'm not educated on what type of tumor that is.

It's a pituitary tumor and it's realllly small and I was on a medication along time ago that now has a lawsuit out for people getting pituitary tumors from it :/
Well anyhow once I stopped the medication the tumor stopped growing and effecting me all together, my doc keeps an eye on it but it hasn't been a problem in years. She let me know that SOMETIMES breastfeeding and the hormones from it can cause those tumors to grow, but it's not something that always happens so i would be watched and if it started to grow at all I would have to stop BFing.

I have never had any problems. I ran a 30K shortly after my son turned one and was fine. Painful, but fine lol. He is almost 19 months and still nursing so my supply is well regulated. I just eased into running longer distances between nursing. Plus I started by taking his and DD with me in the double stroller in case he got hungry or I got full I could nurse him right there.
Just ease into it to see how you do and wait until your supply iswell regulated before you full on run. Maye just power walk or jog for awhile : )

Running shouldn't effect your suppy as long as you are drinking a TON of water. Like I have to feel like I'm drowning myself.
Running can, however, change the taste sonif can be bitter. Lactic acid and all that.

Ok awesome! A friend told me I'd have to quit running if I wanted to BF long and it was depressing me. Thanks for this. I drink lots of water anyways so that's good to know thanks!

No problem, but like the previous poster said easing into it by jogging shorter distances for a bit is a good idea. Especially if you don't keep running steadily through the pregnancy.
And I actually have a condition that causes me to grow rumors in my hands and and wrists, my specialist told me the same thing, that the hormones from pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause them to grow, but I'm still breastfeeding my 22 month old daughter (and 16 weeks pregnant, and still running!) and have never had any issues or growth with the tumors.
