In 2009 Kelly Preston and John Travoltatragically lost their 16-year-old son Jett, and now for the first time, the actress is speaking out about the health issues that led to his death.
"[Jett] was autistic. He had seizures and when he was very young, he had Kawasaki Syndrome," the actress told the hosts on "The Doctors," in an episode airing Nov. 21.
Jett died after he hit his head in a bathtub during a seizure, and the 50-year-old actress is now speaking out about the factors that she believes may have contributed to his autism.
Preston revealed to the hosts that both she and her husband believe that it's the chemicals in the environment and in food that contribute to the disorder. Preston also noted that she had food poisoning when she was five months pregnant, which she believes may have been a factor, in addition to the various medications she was given during labor -- which she described as "fast and hard," which also may have contributed.
Preston seems to have a number of theories about what contributed to her son's health issues, and also revealed to the show's hosts that she had a high fever after giving birth, and was given antibiotics despite her protests that it wouldn't be safe because she was breastfeeding. The actress was assured it was safe to breastfeed while on antibiotics, but says it gave Jett thrush, an infection of Candida yeast which some research has linked to the symptoms of autism.
The actress has spoken before about the pain of losing her son, but not about his health issues. In May, Preston told Amanda de Cadenet on her Lifetime show that she suffered an "enormous loss."
"Nobody should have to lose a child. It's unfathomable. But I'm here to say that you can get through it. You can live again. You can want to live again," she said.

Im sure there are manfy factors that play into autism.. It seems to be getting more common.. Idk if its MORE common or just something we never diagnosed before but its scary to think about

Oh bullsmurf.

If they didn't let their freaky religion dictate his care, he might still be here today.

That's so many "ifs." Throughout her whole pregnancy and after. Very sad to lose a child period though.

I think it is becoming more common. While I was going to school I wrote papers on it and it was like 1 out of 100 (or 150 would have to go back and look) and now it's 1 out of 88. Could be diagnosed more too though like your said.

I think, when something like that happens, and all is said and done we can think about a million things that could contribute to something as scary and as tragic as his death... we make up or find things to blame and that helps us cope...

When I look at my son, and I read new studies about what *may have caused* his birth defect, I've been able to fit into most studies that came out since he was born... its helped me cope with it... but saying these things and trying to find answers now when its all over with are just some things I will prob be dealing with the rest of my life

What care did they chose not to give? Purely curious, as a mom of an epileptic.

I know they're scientologists, and pretty much refuse anything that has anything to do with the brain, at all. Seizure meds, antidepressants, anything like that.

We live right by one of the biggest Scientology churches and they are CRAZY.

ETA: Their official statement is that they don't interfere with medical treatment, but they very much do.

*supposedly* he was on Depakote, but I really doubt he was being given it as required.

They could check his levels i woudl think though during autopsy. I mean if a kid dies because the parents did give him the meds is that neglect? Idk

But i hate depakote. It made my daughter sick and her seizures worse

I don't know if they had an autopsy or not.

And, to be candid, half of my assumptions are based on what I know from the weirdo scientologists I know---

Didn't they deny he had autism while he was alive? I thought I read that Scientologists don't "believe" in autism.
