Just like the other mama said, tell him that he went to heaven or that he went away for a while. He might not comprehend, its hard explain death to little ones.

Sorry for your loss   It's not your fault you didnt know and he didnt show any signs. I would just explain to my son that angels came take him to a beautiful place called heaven. And he now he watching down on him and will always be in his heart. That he loves him very much.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My little brother passed away almost 3 years ago the same exact way
