Should parents with multiple developmentally disabled childr

posted 30th May
Theres this couple I know who have 3 severely developmentally disabled children. One is institutionalized, the other two will never be able to live alone and will never be able to be able to live on their own and none of them will ever be able to be contributing members of society. Even given their genetic history, the couple still wants more children although the doctors have told them they have an extreamly high probablility of having another disabled child. Do you think that people like this should be allowed to have more children?

Personally I don't think so, although to disallow it would be going down a slippery slope with who and who can't have children, etc. But given the fact that they have three children who will never be able to support themselves and that they have a high probablity of having another child with the same problems, I find it morally reprehensable for them to chance bringing that kind of child into this world.

I got this in an email today..

Question 1:

If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who
were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had
syphilis, would you recommend that she have an abortion?

If you said YES, you just killed Beethoven.

Pretty interesting isn't it? Makes a person think before judging someone.

I think it depends on whether or not the child is suffering & in PHYSICAL pain.

My cousin has a 5 year old daughter with downs, & her Dr wanted to abort when she was 20 weeks pregnant. Depending on the disability, these kids whether then can live alone or not can have a a life. I also have a cousin who is institutionalized, wheelchair bound. He's 25 years old, he can't speak, he can't walk, he can't feed himself, he wears diapers, he has seizures - he is constantly getting infections. I think that if she had 3 kids such as my cousin and still wanted more I think she should really think about the well being of the child.

If they want more children, maybe they can consider adoption.

Their first son is exactly how your cousin is except he can walk. Their second two have a milder form of the same thing but are still prone to seizures, are non verbal, and will never be able to live without taking a slew of medications.

I wouldn't personally have any more children in this situation, but Idon't think anyone should be allowed to make that decision except for the parents.

This is comming from someone who thinks teen pregnancies should be considered normal and common place? maybe you should reevaluate your priorities...

Personal note. Anyone not able to take care of a child should not have one. PERIOD. This means Finacially, emotionally, ect. So if they CAN provide for thier children then who are you to say? Just because YOU dont feel they are contributing to your little productive society does not mean that they are not contributing to someone elses.

Just because a disabled child will never beable to take care of its self or be "contributing members of society" does not mean they could not be happy people. They have the right to see the sun shine just as much as everyone elses children. Who knows, maybe they will in fact change someone elses life.

Do you know what it is they have? They told my Aunt that my cousin is the way he is because of a Dr error at birth. She never even sued.
