Best Brand of Formula ?

posted 20th Nov
What's the best (or personal favorite) formula brand ?

I gave my DD her first 3oz of formula last night (she's almost 10 weeks old) , & she spit a lot of it out. I cried , I feel like complete smurf to be honest. I want to keep feeding her breast milk (I've been pumping since she was 4 days old) , but my supply is drying up like crazy .. I only have one 5oz bag of breast milk left in the fridge & it's a struggle trying to keep up with her feedings. & I have a lot of formula at home (they were gifts at my shower) , so I decided to see if she'd drink some last night. The one I used was the Nestlé Good Start .. It's in a tiny glass bottle , that's in a "ready to feed" state. I also have some powdered Low Iron Enfamil formula too .. I figured I'd try 3oz of that one on her maybe tomorrow after I see what her stools look like from the Nestlé Good Start formula.

I am so worried she's going to get constipated

But I'm running out of milk (& I've tried everything to get it back. Seen a lactation consultant about it & everything , tried all her suggestions. & She said that sometimes mothers who pump that can't actually breast feed (DD wouldn't latch) will lose their supply). So I'd like some feed back on formulas you've used , please ? I'm desperate   I want something that will be gentle on her tummy & not constipate her. Does that type of formula even exist ?

TIA , I'm smurfing clueless. I didn't research formula before hand because I never thought I'd need it

I've used Similac Advance with both my kids. Though when LO was born she was very gassy so I gave her Similac Sensitive for a little over a month.

Ive done walmarts name brand and my boys didn't seem to mind it, another great choice I choose is similac advance the blue can... No issues with constipation etc...

I dried up at nine months mama, it is HARD. I sat and cried for about three straight days. I felt like a failure, and like a smurf mom.

But let me tell you, YOU DID YOUR BEST.

What worked for me was giving her an ounce of formula at a time. At first she HATED it. (Can you blame em?) But, after a few feedings and her realizing that's all I could give her (because there were NO breastmilk banks where I lived) she accepted it. Now she loves it. I offered some boob milk later, cause I started lactating again, and she wanted NOTHING to do with it.

Good luck mama!

It all depends on your baby. However, I wouldn't switch back and forth between formulas just to try them out. Sometimes it takes a few days or even a couple of weeks for your baby's system to get used to it.

For what it's worth, I've used Good Start, Similac Advance, Similac Alimentum, Parent's Choice, Similac Soy, Similac Sensitive, and Similac For Spit-up. None of my kids has ever gotten constipated. I hear good things about Enfamil as well. As long as you mix according to the directions, things should be fine. With formula, you might have to burp her awhile after eating (I do with my DD...even when I burp her during her feedings, afterward she will generate some gas as it digests).

Your baby will eat when she's hungry. She might not like the taste because it's so different from breastmilk, but she will get used to it.

I had a similar issue. My DD would latch, but for some reason my boobs just don't "give". She was getting hardly anything even though I did have milk. This was my fourth time trying to breastfeed. After a few days of seeing her continue to become jaundiced, I started her on formula. Even pumping, I could never get more than a few drops from each breast. She's thriving, chunking up nicely (12 pounds at 7 weeks old), and is happy.

Give the baby a week before switching to a new formula because changing it so fast is hard on their bellies We used similac advance and had issues, switched after 4 weeks to similac soy...that was worse and after a week of that we switched to similac alimentun. That's what lo is on now

Dont feel bad, my milk started to dry around 7 months and there is nothing you can do about, I tried a natural vitamin called fenugreek (found it at walmart) it worked for a while. I would recommend at least giving it a try, it wont hurt!!! I also found that eating peanut butter, oatmeal, and milk three times a day helped my milk supply.

But we started out on the Similac Advanced and it was too harsh on her belly, so we went to Similac Sensitive (orange can) and i gave her gas drops with it every time per the Dr. she then started to throw up real bad and cried all the time. We tried the Similac Alimentum which smells disgusting and she wouldn't even drink it. we ended up back on the Sensitive and i mixed it half and half with breast milk for about 2 weeks and then gave her straight formula, she was fine it just took her some time to get used to it.

Don't feel bad i dried up around 4 months.. but I'm still pumping and I'm able to give her at least 4-5 oz a day depending on what i eat.. I've started her on Enfamil and she seems to be fine with it. At first she hated it and sucked on the boob lol but when she realized not enough was coming out she took the bottle... Don't switch up.. Wait at least one week

I was also freaked out about giving my baby formula and had heard all these horror stories about it constipating babies who were breast fed I didn't want to do it but I just went straight to similiac sensitive and he's been on it since about week 3 and he will be 6 weeks in a few days he's never had a problem taking it and has never been constipated he usually poops once a day so its not like breast feeding its a rare occasion if he poops 3 or 4 times a days only happened a few times. Your baby may be a bit more gassy but gas drops helped. When we were switching I did 1 breastmilk bottle then one formula bottle for about 10 days then we went to all formula and did gas drops a lot for about 2 weeks now he eats and poops fine no gas drops! Good luck hope you find what works for you I understand ur pain I felt terrible when I gave him formula for the first time but on the other hand im feeding my baby reguardless and that's more important!
