religion and kids not believing

posted 20th Nov
What would you do if it become evident your kids did not follow your beliefs anymore? Would you allow them to explore their own views? Or force them to continue going with you to services regardless?

no brainer, allow them to explore. As for continuing to go to service, depends on how old they are and if they can stay home alone.

I would never make DD follow what I follow. I'm atheist, and she knows about "god" and has come to the conclusion it's silly, but is someone wants to believe that, they can. If she got older and decided to convert to something I wouldn't stop her, but I would probably make her study every major religion, like I did when I was younger.

We've talked about this, and when they are in their own house and no longer under our roof they can do as they please. until then, they will go to church with us on Sundays. They will also be going to private Catholic school, just like their dad did in fact the same exact schools as him.

I actually grew up Jewish but realized I did not fully believe in the religion. I was allowed to look into other religions and was thankful to my parents for not forcing a religion on me.

I am 100% for allowing my children to research and follow what they believe or want to understand. I get SO mad when my mom tries filling their head with Christian stuff because she isn't giving them facts, she is telling them if they don't love Jesus they will go to hell. I am SO not OK with that!

I'm not religious. I'm agnostic but if any of my children have an interest in religion I will allow them to explore those views. However I will be cautious and any service they go to I would want to check it out with them. I want their beliefs to be genuine, not being bribed or manipulated. Also I wouldn't want them attending a church that has hateful and/or intolerant views.

I would allow them (and encourage them) to explore, but Sundays they go to church.

My religious beliefs are not mainstream. I do not believe that only Christians go to heaven and I do not believe that one path is right for everyone.

I would encourage my kids to explore other denominations in Christianity as well as other religions. I want them to feel comfortable in the religion they choose.

But, Sundays we go to my church because I'm the mom and I make the rules! muahahahhahaha

I don't see the point in forcing them to try to believe what you want. In fact the whole "you will go as long as you live here" tends to ensure if they don't believe, that they end up hating religion.

I'm agnostic, but I have always told dd1 (who is 9) that I want her to believe in whatever she chooses. She doesn't believe in God as of now, she thinks it's silly, but if she were to change her beliefs, I would be okay with that. Well, unless it was something like Scientology! LOL

You worded this a lot better than I could have... I don't mind them exploring other religions. In fact I am not a born catholic and actually not a full convert, yet. We decided before we got pregnant that they would be raised catholic. I am not overly religious and my views are not extreme. They can do as they please, but on Sundays they will go to church with the family.

This is so true. Forcing a belief on anyone will turn them off!

They will be allowed to make the same decisions regarding religion that I did.

I would respect their beliefs just like others.
