WIC and Formula Change
posted 20th Nov
My son was on Enfamil, but we had to change it to Gerber because it's the brand WIC covers. Well, he's been having a problem with it so I made a doctor's appointment for him today to see if he has an allergy. What are the diagnosis' do WIC take in order to change the brand back to Enfamil?

How long has it been since the change?
Normally wic only covers two brands, here it's gerber (their main) and Similac with a prescription from the pedi.

Usually it's reflux or an allergy, but I don't think WIC even needs an official ICD-9 code. I think they just need to doc note.
But your doc should know all about it

Honk you need a doctors note to take to WIC to get your formula changed

We changed it about a week and a half ago. Here in Florida they use Gerber and Enfamil with a doctor's note, but I wasn't sure what medical issues were considered for the change.

The WIC lady was really rude when I told her I was getting a doctor's note to change it. She told me even if I got a prescription I need a medical diagnosis they approve or they won't change it.

You should call and make sure a note from the Dr. is enough or if you have to get a form from WIC to take to the Dr. with you. Here in OH you have to get a form from WIC and take that to the Dr. for them to fill out before they will change the formula, they wont just accept a Dr.'s note.

no you dont. I simply asked my doctor to write a prescrip for the formula I wanted. Upset stomach is a diagnosis I guess if they MUSt have one. but you dont, all you need is the prescription

A lot of times it isn't really a medical issue. I just preferred my son on Similac and the pedi wrote a script. However, he's on gerber Soy now because he's semi lactose and wic won't cover similac soy, even with a script.
Just talk to his pedi, I'm sure they'll be glad to write a script for you.

I smurfing hate the WIC office. Only one woman there is ever nice, everyone else is extremely rude. I don't do formula, but I was told that all you need is a prescription from your pedi for them to change formulas.

Awesome! Thanks. I'll talk to his pedi today to see what they can do.
