I had my son Daniel about 11 days ago and have been brestfeeding but pumping out the milk to make sure he was actually getting it .... Well everything has been going fine until today . I haven't been able to really pump put ne milk and my boobs are really soft and I don't know why . I called the doc but no one has called me back yet and I'm soo upset cause its really dissapointing. Has this happened to ne one else? I keep trying to pump and I get maybe at most one to two onces out I'm afaird though I'ma have to give him formula. It sucks

Are you dehydrated, because I actually dried up because I forgot to drink one day, so I had to pump like crazy to get my supply back up.The only other thing I've heard causes this is smoking, but I wouldn't admit to that because you just don't wanna open yourself up to that when you're stressed!

How much do you think you should be getting? I could only pump about an ounce at that time. I could only pump about three until recently. Pumping isn't a true indication of how much milk they're getting. Also, you won't be engorged anymore because you have regulated your milk supply. If you're worried about supply, the best thing to do is let your baby nurse directly. You can also try supplements that might help it.

Do makes sure you are drinking! Water, juice, whatever

I am not going to knock pumping, but I am going to ask, is the only reason you are pumping to make sure you see what he is eating? If so, put him to the breast. That is the BEST way to stimulate milk production, if you can get him to latch and suck, even if it takes a few tries! My husband had issues with me breastfeeding at first because he couldn't tell how much she was eating, until the ped and I explained that as long as there is stuff coming out you can tell how much is going in ;)

Are you stressed? The other day I was having a stressful day, and was pumping before I had to leave her. I only got about 1 ounce out of both sides. And, that was three hours after she had eaten. After that, I have had to work on building up my supply. You might try pumping after you breastfeed, that could help build up your supply.
Also, like the other ladies said, make sure you drink enough.

Pumping canmake you dry up. That happened to me. Your son will be getting enough if you are feeding him every two to three hours. You really should NOT be pumping for at least two to three weeks, AT ALL! It will mess up your milk supply. Start feeding him exclusively on the breast as often as he will eat. If he is having lots of pee diapers, he is getting enough milk. If you need anything, PM me!

Oh and I forgot to say that your baby will do the best at getting milk out of your breast. Often they will get more then pumping ever will. It helps if you do breast compressions when your son first gets on the breast. Once he latches on, gently put pressure on the base of your breast. It will help him get more mik in the beginning. This worked well for me when I was first nursing. Also, you can feed a BF baby as often as they ask to eat. If that mean every hour...feed every hour. That doesn't mean that he isn't getting enough to eat. It just means that breast milk goes through the system faster then formula. I would try not to give any formula because he might deny your breast. My son did that and it was a bitch to get him to latch on the next time. AsI said, if you need anything just ask me! Also, drink lots of water all day long. It will help too!

Make sure you are drinking lots of fluids, of course. After engorgement wears off they do get soft. When I need to pump I can do about 2 ounces, the way it was explained to me but my nutritionist was when he is going through his growth spurts he will want to eat a lot more then usual and that is nature's way of uping your milk supply. It is better to breastfeed then pump because the babies can get more out, I had just pumped the other night so I could let my parents babysit. Eli was still hungry RIGHT after I pumped and he managed to get a lot out of me.

it happened to me, my nipples were cracked and i started pumping b/c it hurted less than nursing so my supply started to decrease i had to give formula to my baby but then when i saw that i was barely producing milk i went to my doctor and he recommended to drink lots of liquid and eat oatmeal and to try to pump less and nurse frequently and it worked, i have a good supply now, i'm still giving him formula tho b/c i'm working and i don't have the chance to pump here at work
