Best dog breed with a toddler around?
posted 19th Nov
My favorite dogs are chihuahuas hands down, but with a toddler I don't think it's such a good idea. My grandma's chihuahua HATES my DD, and DD will just laugh when she snaps at her.
So what are some good, kid friendly dogs?
I'd prefer a smaller breed. I've never had a big dog before. But you can tell me about your experience with a big dog and I might consider.

I own a 4 year old lab who is amazing with my 2.5 year old. But he has a great temper in general and is a laid back dog. My in laws have a beagle who loves my son but does some things I don't like, he likes to nip at his hands and he jumps on my son often. They also have a 5 month old shepherd who acts just like the beagle.

The only one I can think of is a golden retriever. Such beautiful, gentle , nice and loyal dogs.

Lab. I cannot stress enough how amazing labs are as dogs.
My now husband has had miley for almost 2 years, we just moved in a year ago with him. My daughter is 4. Miley is a protector of DD. She gets depressed with DD leaves to go to her dads.
One night I was upstairs with DD and miley downstairs..DD has been getting into my scissors and i had been getting on to her. I hear miley barking like someone is breakin g in, she runs up stairs to get me and i follow her down and she goes next to DD and barks at the scissors.
I am a firm believer in their breed after that incident.

Chihuahuas are typically very skittish and make smurffy dogs with kids in the home. Of course there are exceptions to that rule, but generally, crappy breed. I had a chihuahua, my best friend had her sister, and mine was always scared and would attack my kids, her sister is perfect with children. Yorkies are usually good with children. I have one that gets the crap beat out of her daily LOL. Same with my lhattesse, he's an AMAZING dog, hands freakin down.

I have a pointer who seriously deals with anything. Being ripped on, climbed on, chewed on, stepped on... She's amazing. And extremely protective. When people try to rough house with my children she goes into protection mode. She's also protection trained though, lol. They're just an amazing breed, pointers. They have the capacity to do anything and are the BEST family dogs. They're so incredibly loyal. The only issue for you... She's almost 90 pounds.
I also have a bluetick who is tolerant of a lot too. Not AS tolerant but she's only 6 months old.

Larger breeds tend to be better with children. Mutts can be the best dogs.

Also my parents have a stafford shire, aka Pitt bull that was raised with my niece and is amazing with her and he is great with my son. I really think its how you raise the dog and there personality.

Shih-Tzu's tend to make great kids dogs. Their small, but not one of the shaky little yappy varieties. Just dont get bullsmurffed into an "Imperial" Shih-Tzu, there is no such thing, it's irresponsible breeders ruining the breed by intentionally making them very tiny. A Shih-Tzu's should weight between 9 - 16lbs, in that range.

None! Lol seriously IMO dogs and toddlers are very hectic. But we have Shetland Sheepdogs as well as my mom. They are between 15-30 lbs ideally aroud 20. They're very energetic but really good with kids of all ages other than trying to herd them. They do require a fence so they don't chase cars. Since they're herding dogs they like to chase things that move. Ours are 11 months and 12 weeks.
