Precipitous labor

posted 19th Nov
Precipitous labor is a labor that is three hours or less. Roughly 2% of all births are precipitous.

I had a precipitous labor, 45 minutes exactly from beginning to end. The doctor who delivered my daughter said it was the fastest labor/birth he had ever been witness to, and said I was quite the anomaly (I was 16, and it was my first child). I was just wondering, for other mamas who have experienced this kind of labor and have more than one child, how your second (or third, fourth etc) labor turned out? I am not pregnant or anything, but me and SO have been talking about babies a lot and it's really got me curious how that would work out for me the second time around. I made it to the hospital with about 10 minutes to spare with my daughter, and I always worry that when I have another one I wont make it at all. It's been a joke in my family that I will have to pitch a tent outside the hospital to make sure I am able to make it in time for my next one. Lol. Everyone that knows me talks about how lucky I was to have such a short labor, but I didn't really feel that way. I kinda felt ripped off. I mean, I didn't want hours of horrible pain, but I would have liked it if some of my family could have made it in time for the birth (nobody could make it in time), I also wish it would have been a bit longer so that I could comprehend everything happening. When my daughter was born I was so in shock at how fast everything went the I didn't really feel like I got to fully enjoy seeing her for the first time or anything. Anyways, please do share your experiences!

TIA ladies.

I always feel silly complaining that labor is too short.. haha but if I could have gotten even another hour I would have been happy!

I'll trade you. I was in labor 26 hours. I wanted a epi-free birth and gave in after 15 or so hours. Did you tear? I was lucky, I only pushed 2 1/2 times. It took literally like 3 minutes and I only have three stitches.

Lol, no I didn't.. I swear I had the world's easiest birth. My doctor told me that I had "a very beautiful birthing canal". .. and that I should keep having children because my body was perfect for it..   I had no pain after birth, except some minor stinging when I peed   36 hours... that's hell.. I wouldn't want one that long! I have a girlfriend who was in labor for 3 days before her smurffy doctor realized that he needed to do a c-section.!!

Oh, wow. I kind of hate you a little, lol. I'd give anything to birth like that. I want to do a home water birth SOOO bad, but I can't handle the pain. I mean, I could if I had no choice, but I can't willingly go through a labor without an epi. I wish I had your beautiful birth canal   The nurse told me I have perfect nipples, though. She said my boobs were perfect breast feeding boobs. So I got that going for me

LOL That's awesome. The only thing about my labor is that there was literally zero breaks from contractions the entire time. I went from nothing to intense hard labor. There wasn't even a three second gap between contractions. I guess that's the trade off though!   Lol I had only lady who visited me tell me to lie about how long it was so that other mama's didn't hate me

That's hilarious. The nurse who said I had perfect nipples also told me to lie about how long it took, but for DD to latch instead of my labor. She literally latched right away, no problems. She said it normally takes a lot longer than that.

I have a friend who was in early labor for a WEEK. She was finally induced, and on his way out her baby turned sideways. She had like 140-some stitches

Yeah Teagan had no interest in feeding for the first 18 hours after she was born because she had high blood sugar.. and all I wanted was for her to eat because my boobs hurt sooo bad. She had issues latching at first.. but once she figured it out she didn't wanna let go.

OMG!!!!! :'( I could cry for her..that would probably suck for months and months afterwards! It would probably remain so tender even after the stitches were out!!

I never really asked how she felt afterwards, I only know that she hates my guts because I only had three stitches
Aww, it sucks when they don't want to eat and your boobs hurt.

Lol, that poor girl! Oh the joys of breastfeeding! I know that most mamas enjoy it, but I really didn't. I didn't last past six months. I had so much milk that I was leaking non stop. As soon as my bra came off I would spray like little water guns, when I had a bra on I had to switch my stupid breast pads hourly at least. On more than one instance I was in public and the pad wiggled off the area it needed to be on and I leaked everywhere!   Hated it!

My first labor was only 1 hr 46 minutes from the very first contraction of my whole pregnancy to delivery. I was at the hospital a little less than an hour.

With my second I was induced partly because of having such a fast first labor (along with other reasons). I was already 5 cm so they broke my water and started a tiny bit of pitocin. Contractions kicked in right away and I delivered my daughter only 36 minutes later!
