Should I be waking her up?

posted 19th Nov
With DS he was bottle/formula fed and he would wake up and want to eat every 3 hours when he was an infant, so I never had to worry about making sure he was eating. But DD is 9 days old and for the last few days, at night time she will sleep over the 3 hour mark that the nurses told me to follow. She usually will only sleep one extra hour, so it doesn't seem like a lot but should I be waking her up anyway at that 3 hour mark?

I've also noticed at the times where she sleeps over the 3 hours, getting her to feed for longer than 10-15 is difficult, she will fall asleep again and then usually wants to feed again an hour later. Is that normal? I feed on demand and she is giving plenty of wet diapers so I know she is getting at least a decent amount to eat.

Thanks ladies, I don't like the idea of waking her up if she is tired. But while I was in the hospital with her, if she tried to sleep a little over the nurses made it seem like I was neglecting her. They would just keep telling me that I need to wake her up every 2-3 hours and make sure she eats.

But I also didn't know if maybe the reason she is eating so close together at some feedings is because she is waiting an hour longer to feed?

number one rules NEVER WAKE A SLEEPING BABY lol.
From your other post, she eating so much awake, she doesnt need it when shes asleep. You're doing a great job, if shes hungry, she'll wake up

!!!! I've never even been given a schedule. Unless there are underlying health issues, general rule of thumb- Never wake a sleeping baby! Lol I'm sitting here nursing my 10 day old right now... I have no idea how long it'll take and he may want to eat again in an hour, maybe not for 4. Lol my life revolves around nursing right now.

With jaundice its different.

And its normal to lose wight like that.

With a healthy baby there is no need to wake them.

Maybe that's why they wanted me to in the hospital. She was a high risk pregnancy due to a blood issue I have, and a common side effect to the baby is jaundice, but her levels weren't that concerning (according to her pedi) and her levels were tested a few days ago and her pedi said she was fine.

I had a normal pregnancy and DS didn't have jaundice and I had to wake him up every 2 hours and feed him in the hospital, and they made me write it down. When I got home, I fed on demand and let him sleep.
